AA 737 50's Scheme

Mon Feb 21, 2000 9:04 am

Is it true AA is thinking of painting a 737-800 in the 50's scheme too??? I think it would look really sharpe if they did. Would also love to see a MD-80 painted like that.

A few months ago there were a group of AA mechanics trying to get a AA 727-223 painted in the 1960s orange lighting bolt scheme with the round logo on the tail, the colors right before the current scheme that ended in 1968. Im not sure where they stand in their efforts, I havent spoken to my mechanic friends in a few weeks. As far as a 737-823 in an older scheme I havnet heard a thing about it. Also the reason why the mechanics want it on a 727 is that its the last plane in AAs fleet that ever wore that scheme, everything else has worn the current colors.

Air Canada's Ancient Livery Resurrected

It's a nice idea. Here is Air Canada's A319 painted in a very old livery.

Regarding The Old Livery........

Mon Feb 21, 2000 11:49 am

Regarding the Air Canada / TCA colours, Some pilots and other AC employees wanted AC to take this scheme on perminantly for all of the airplanes, the only thing is, most of Air Canada's planes have more plastic in them then they do metal (ie: AIRBUS) this scheme would have looked amazing on a 744 or a 767, but as you can see in the post above, the AIRBUS planes don't look quite as nice with bare metal paint.....

A Retrojet 737-800!!! This will be an interesting one! I hope I can get some pictures of this one if AA does plan on painting it.
Now I wonder what an AA 777 would look like in Retro Colors!

A AA retro 727 that would be really sharpe I'd love to see that. I wish more airlines would paint an plane or two in their old colors like a United 777 in the old Friendship colors or how about a TWA 717 in its 1960's colors??? I hope that the mechanics can convince American to let them paint a 727 in the retro colors, since in a few years the 727 will no longer be a part of the AA fleet.

It's True...

Tue Feb 22, 2000 12:02 am

The rumors are true! AA is indeed going to paint a 737-800 in a retro 1960's scheme. It will not be a 727 as some have mentioned, but will be the 738.

AA also has yet to determine what they are going to do with the 757 that currently has the retro scheme. This aircraft is coming up for it's "C" check and there has not been a definite answer if AA will decide to strip it and paint in the current color scheme.

Maybe I'm a little too young to know, but I think AA's old colors look tacky. But you guys can have your opinion... I will probably never have to look at them.

Why don't we - the public - mail the airlines and tell them to paint at least one plane in an old color? That would rule!

Hey American, Listen Up!

I personally feel that their current color scheme might have been good looking when it was introduced in the late 1960's,however as time went on, I feel that it's lack of originality has very considerably reduced it's impact.......I was not alive in the 60's but I have seen pictures of American's old color scheme, and I feel that although it has been decided that a 738 will be painted in that scheme, they should paint some of their 727's in that scheme since they were the last ones in the fleet to wear the scheme, and I personally find the orange scheme more attractive.

One question though? Did any AA 727-200 series wear the orange scheme when they first came out, or was it just the 727-100 series?
