Gulf Air Looking To Add 777/A330

Sun Jul 25, 2004 7:53 am

I've been told GF, have began talks with Boeing/Airbus to add 10 777s or A330s into the fleet. This comes after the board approved the 2nd/3rd year plan of the recovery program.

New business/first class cabins have also been given the go ahead into the existing A330/A340 fleet.

I would imagine that they would add A330s, although I would not mind see 777s in their colors.

It will almost definitely go to Airbus. Introducing the larger 777 on the current network will siginificantly impact loadfactors (reason used by QR when they chose the 332 over the 772)

Definitely going for the A330. No argument. I've lost hope that a middle eastern would look at Boeings again.

With the existing fleet of Airbus(320,332 & 343) it would not really make any sense to add the 777 model unless it was the 773.

The 773 could be a stand alone fleet unit due to the increase in avaliable seats vs the 343 fleet.

I however fleel that additional A330's make more sense,if they want capacity then the A330-300X has the extra pax capacity and range that was not avaliable when they aquired the 332's.

Let's wait and see,if the 777 wins,i'll be surprised.

How soon they forget Farnborough and the Emirates order....

Don't forget RJ are replacing the last A313's and the 320 fleet with a mix of 73G & 738.

I think they should do a split, 5 777s & 5 A330s! That way everybody wins!  Big thumbs up

Well that is a stupid decision! Why would an airline with an Airbus fleet consider a 777 when what they need can be taken care of with the 330? I could see them looking at the 777 if the were comparing it to the 340 but the 330?????? Not the brightest!

Except Gulf Air, who would have additional costs.

They could be looking at replacements for their 767s on the Gulf Traveller product, in which case the 777 would be too much aircraft for the job. Those routes are pretty short range for the 777. The 7E7 is presumably not in their plans at the moment.

It would be best if GF order a combination of 5-6 A 345s + 4-5 A 332s...because the A 345s can come in handy in launching multiple weekly nonstop flights to USA-CAN and AUST which will make the airline compete in a more effective manner than its biggest rival Emirates of the region.

Also with ETIHAD (EY) ordering long range A 345s/346s at Farnborough, it obviously goes to show that EY have some major long haul nonstop destinations in their minds too...hence a sizeable A 345 order would do well for GF.

I wouldnt advise GF getting the B 772LR because it will ruin the fleet commonality of the airline and make it spend unrequired $$$ for a different set of cabin-cockpit-engineering-maintainenance crew !!!

The best bet if they want 10 aircraft is :

6-7 A 345s + 3-4 A 332s

The A345 is not a good choice for GF. They are only just managing to deal with their losses, and opening up questionable routes in competition with stronger competitors is not going to be a smart move for an airline with shaky foundations.

The last thing they need is to open lossmaking routes with aircraft they would find hard to offload if it all went wrong for them.

GF would do better consolidating and exploring steady sources of revenue rather than go into a four way contest with Etihad, Qatar and Emirates for C market traffic which is hardly unlimited and potentially lossmaking.

According to their Chariman James Hogan, their restructuring process is improving their profitaility much faster than had originally planned.

I've just got more info from a member of A.net

"Just to let you know that James Hogan has talked about getting 5 aircraft only and as far as I know that is what he asked his board for. Expect the A330 to be ordered. The aircraft will start delivery in the 2005/6 time frame to replace the B767. Plans are very fluid though, just a short while back there were plans for regional jets but these were recently dropped so anything could happen

"As for the new seats, initially they only ordered enough seats for the A330s. They will be configured in 8F/24J instead of 12F/24J. The seats in First Class are the same as those on Cathay Pacific and Qatar Airways. 1-2-1 config 79" seat pitch. Business class will get a new "shell" type seat but it won't be flat and seat pitch is a bit tightsome text.

I remember reading an article in Flight International in 2002, that the airline was planning to develop their long-haul fleet around the A330 and that they were disposing of their A340s. This was before their restructuring was launched last year, and seeing how the A340s are still flying I think they have scrapped that idea.

Additional A330s would made the most sense for Gulf Air, but we are not sure what Gulf Air has in mind for the aircraft......if its a direct 763 replacement, then of course A332s would be ideal, but Gulf Air may be looking for something bigger at the top end of its fleet and then the 773ER could be the choice.

With the mega-expansion going on with Gulf state carriers, its very hard to predict what these carriers are going to do next....maybe Gulf Air has determined that its needs more large airplanes to compete with Emirates, Qatar, Eithad, and the others.

Personally, I am amazed by whats going on in the Gulf region with respect to airlines.....the growth of EK to date is remarkable and their future plans are almost incomprehesible, add expansion plans by Qatar, Eithad, Gulf, Air Arabia and one must wonder if it is possible for all of these carriers to succeed! On the other hand, if you go back 20 to 30 years, SQ and CX were simply regional carriers with very limited long-haul services, so I guess, with the right product, anything is possible.

Won't the rest of the B763s be moved to their all-economy class subsidery Gulf Traveller?

The original plan had been to add a few extra 332's,however used RR 332's where not avaliable, hence the addition of the extra 343's,A40-LG to LJ.
