The AA MD11s were replaced by the 777s - AA was never 100% happy with the MD11. I believe that the entire ex-AA MD11 fleet is now with FedEx hauling cargo.

I also believe that they were taken out of service after 9/11. I must say, the MD-11s were the oddball in their fleet.

As long as I remember, AA was not pleased with the MD-11 at all... Not sure the exact technical reasons but they decided later to swith to 777 and sell their MD-11's to FedEx which converted them to Frighters...

Would anyone happen to know the major routes AA used their MD-11's for?

DFW-AA), Japan">NRT?
DFW-LHR?
etc?

I don't think the MD11's were ever parked at MHV. AA did have quite a few DC-10's out there (one or two of them still remain). But I believe that all of the MD11's went through MIA to be 'decommissioned' by AA, and then sent somewhere else for the Fedex conversion.

Trickijedi, for a while before they were taken out of service, AA flew them daily to Frankfurt (I think it was from DFW) - I'm not sure about the other routes, but I'm quite certain that the routes to Japan were also flown with them...

I believe the MD-11s were ordered exclusively for routes such as DFW-NRT and ORD-NRT. However, I do believe that AA used them on DFW-FRA for a while.

I am personally glad they're gone. I generally dislike tri-jets, and the 777 is definitely a superior aircraft.

I think that the MD-11s were also used on ORD-LHR and ORD-AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, but that was some time ago.

From what I know, the MD-11 did not have the range that McD promised AA. In fact, AA was so unhappy after the first plane was delivered that Bob Crandall told McD that unless McD either came up with a fix or financial incentives, AA would not accept any other aircraft.

I think AA ordered 19, with options for another 19. Like the Fokkers, the options were never converted to firm orders.

The ironic thing is that Boeing made folding wingtips an option on the 777 at AA's request, but then AA ordered the MD-11. I think the reason was that AA could get the MD-11s delivered earlier.

I know that AA used the MD-11 into MAN for a short time. Not sure if it was on their services to ORD or the short-lived DFW service or even both.

I have seen them in the past at London Heathrow, a great sight. I would love to know why American didnt like them, also other airlines for that reason. I know that freight companys like them.

Hey

I personally love the MD-11. Thats why me name is AlitaliaMD11.

I first getting into them when i saw them at JFK. When i was little they would always be there when we flew on AA to SJU even once we flew on one to SJU. I seem to remember them flying to LGW from JFK??? donno. Sure do miss them though but the AA titles where really streched across the deck.

Just adding two cents here...what was said above is true. Crandall wasn't at all pleased with the MD-11, simply because they didn't lived up to what McDonnell Douglas promised. American had 19 ships, with options on 31 more. All of them with to Fed Ex for freight hauling. One was written off with Fed Ex when the aircraft flipped upside down on finals...thankfully the crew was alright. Regards.

Personally, I loved the MD-11's. I know that this airline had it's proponents as well as opponents, but I believe that the final nail in the MD-11's coffin was the crash of the Swissair MD-11 off the coast of Nova Scotia. Anytime there is a horrific crash, the general flying public steers away from the type of aircraft involved. It doesn't have to make sense because 90% of the flying public are largely ignorant about the safety of a particular aircraft. The MD-11 certainly had its distractors before the Swissair crash, but any positives the aircraft had were taken away after this highly publicized accident.
Oh how I miss Midway Airlines. A class act right to then end.

AA used it on ORD-MAN. The DFW service was a 767.

Got to agree with the other posters, the AA MD-11 was a stunning looking aircraft. There was someting just "right" with AA's livery on the MD-11.

That and a certain widget livery of course!

I flew a DL MD-11 back in 1999 MAN-ATL and it was hell.I thought the service was shocking and the cabin felt cheap and nasty. All the way, there was a repetetive pulsing drone through the cabin, sounded like when you are on slow decent and the engines are at idle, but from the moment we hit cruise altitude to when we reached the US. Worst flight I have taken.had no sleep and the cabin was just plain bland.Wish we'd taken AA via ORD now!

Just to add to what some people said above, the AA MD-11s were replaced (from what I have read in several places) because the plane couldn't meet the range McDonnell Douglas promised.

Loved the looks of those AA MD-11s though . . . nice aircraft.

MDD promised certain performance parameters in terms of range at certain payloads.

The MD-11 never delivered any of them.

Never had a chance to fly the 11s, just the 10s which I loved flying on. I did love the look of both and am somewhat sorry to see so few of them these days.

The startling factor about the 11 is the difficulty that is faced when a plane does not exceed expectations, or meet guarantees from the manufacturer. A lesson that should be continually remembered by both A & B in their current new plane efforts. Exceed expectations or face a great risk of failure.

AA had up to 21-24 in there fleet at one time. 3 let the fleet to "Africa One" back in 94-95 i believe. The last flights used for the AA MD-11's where alittle after 9/11 they where used for the DFW- (somewhere in South America) routes. They where only running 2 MD-11's back in August of 01, each one alternated nights for the run to South America. AA wasnt really that happy with there MD-11's because they didnt have the range they where promised out it. If Robert Crandell would do it over again i bet he would have went for the 744 instead of the MD-11's. Either way the first 777 entered the fleet in fall of 98. AA now has 45 of the 777's with 9 still on the way sometime in the next 3 years. This tells you how much they love the 777 and the need for it in AA's fleet. The MD-11 just wasnt a good for AA anymore.

One a personal note: I love the MD-11 as a spotter and aviation enthusiust, however mechanics HATE this plane. Its a pain in the butt to work on and is always breaking. However the pilots i have talked to about this aircraft cant say enough good things about it......go figure, mx and pilots not seeing eye to eye...lol.

I personally loved the MD-11 in AA colors. The three engines and the winglets added to its sexiness. I flew the MD-11 on three occasions - (1) JFK-SDQ, (2) SDQ back in 1996. I was surprised they used the MD-11 because AA usually flies the A300-600R on routes to Dom. Rep. and the Caribbean in general.

I can remember a summer some years ago when there were 3 MD11 parked at a time at the terminal in F R A. They came from ORD, DFW, and JFK. Don`t know the year exactly, must have been around 2000.

For how many years did the MD11 fly in AA colours?

I saw one land at Mojave-MHV in the summer of 96. There were no other AA MD-11s there, so I wonder what it was doing in MHV if most of them transited MIA before going to FedEx. I remember precisely cause my 'then' wife made a comment about "those thingys" on the tips of the wings!

As for it being a mechanics nightmare. Being an automobile lover as well....some of the worlds finest cars are pure nirvana to drive, and a nightmare to repair. The 60's Jaguar X-type comes to mind. The most beautiful car ever made, joy to drive, double up on the Prozac if she breaks down.

I worked at AA during the time the MD-11 was introduced. It may have been pretty to look at but it was a total lemon of an aircraft. The fist class lav would overflow when being watered. MD had to make all the doors the lav compartments and other fittings out of the thinnest plastics to save weight which made all the fittings flimsy and cheap looking. Just about every system at one point or another would go down. It was an overall difficult plane for the flight crew to deal with. As an agent dispatching the aircraft I cringed when I was assigned a departure with that aircraft because the odds were good you'd be yelled at due to mechanical delays. We called the MD-11 the "scud" (as in missile) since it only took off on only occasion and you couldn't tell were it would land since it had to make unscheduled mechanical stops somewhere between ORD and AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA. The DC-10s it replaced were ready to be replaced but those MD-11s were a total nightmare.

American never had more than 19 different MD-11s in the fleet. From N1750 to N1768 is all they ever had. AA at one time, envisioned a fleet of 50 MD-11s had the aircraft meet expectations. The only time AA considered the 744 when they were awarded the SJC-AA), Japan">NRT and the DFW-AA), Japan">NRT routes, and even then the 744 would have come from Canadian Int'l when that airline didn't need the 3 ships anymore. Once AA retired the 2 747SPs, they were not going to commit to any more quads, probably never again. Now AA is strictly commited to an all-twin powered fleet. Sorry folks, but we'll won't ever likely see any 744s, A340s or A380s with American. Regards.

Those AA Md-11's were my favorite aircraft to see on my trips to various airports. Back in July 96, we booked flights man-ord on AA55/54 the flight was supposed to be an MD-11 service, but we ended up on a 763. I was gutted when we got to the gate and saw a 767-300 land and taxi in. I miss seeing those birds.

AA also used the MD-11 twice daily for their flights between MIA-EZE (Buenos Aires, Argentina) between 1995 and 2001!!
The only flights I did for many years where the EZE-MIA ones, and that's why I happen to love the MD-11, since most my travel memories take me back to that plane.
Actually, the MD-11 has been replaced by a B777 and a B763 to cover the EZE-MIA daily route. I always try to book my tickets for the N°908 flight, which is done by the B777! Then, for the daily EZE-JFK flights and the daily EZE-DFW flights AA has chosen to use the B763 plane.

It was suggested that they change the livery from the current to all blue for the MD11's, that way they could match the rest of AA's ground equipment.

Been there, done that. Trip to LGW from DFW was delayed 4 hours once because of this bird. Oh well, no worries...it happens. Too bad she couldn't deliver. I think it's fair to say that wherever they're flying the T7's now is where they used to fly the MD11's. LHR is the exception as JFK/BOS etc. are all-T7 to LHR now. The MD did fly ORD-LHR sometimes I do believe...

I can tell you from a AA ramp rat point of view, the MD-11 could be a nightmare to work on. Constantly going down due to mechanical problems and the like.

AA from DFW used them on daily services to AA), Japan">NRT, SCL, GRU, AB) (FRA / FRF / EDDF), Germany">FRA, ORD, and MIA. The SCL and GRU flights were mainly 767-300 flights, but load factors would often require the MD-11.

Above it all, I do miss the "hum" of the engines and the way it used to thunder down the runway at DFW. It posseses graceful lines, and stable rides. A great aircraft that was doomed from the start due to a bad reputation from the DC-10.

Stirling:

If the MD-11 was anywhere close to the Jaguar X-types to work on, I guarantee you it was pure hell. I spent many hours with busted knuckles and curse-filled air trying to work on an XK-E 4.2 and later the V-12 XK-E. Tuning the V-12 was a 2-man job.

The routes AA flew out of LHR with the MD-11 were

JFK
ORD
MIA

NO OTHERS

From a personal view, it was always great to fly on one of these birds.... Especially in F as it was always very quite. Just to reinforce FlagshipAZ point, You are indeed correct AA only Had 19 Scuds N1750-N1768.

I stand corrected, i looked it up as well.....19 MD-11's for AA. However they did let 3 go to Africa One on a wet lease or something of some sort. Its a shame Africa One never worked out though. Either way, the MD-11 was/is an absolute beauty to watch perform.
