Where To Fly The DC-9 10 In The USA?

Mon Jul 26, 2004 12:52 pm

Ok, I'm probably gonna get flayed alive for what I'm about to start a thread about, but here goes, coz I really wanna know!

I'm hoping to do a little jaunt across the pond in the next couple of months, and thought it might be a good time to take a ride on one of NW's last DC-9 10 series if any are still in service. I remember reading recently that they are / were gonna be retired very soon, so I guess I may already be too late. If there are any in service, which route(s) do they operate on??

Many thanks, and sorry for a NW DC-9 reference!

I could gather from a thread that discusses what NW's fleet might look like in a few years that there are still DC-9-10's in domestic service and, as you mention, they will be retired soon. I am sure that someone will be able to provide you some routes served by this type.
Next flights: MEX-LAX AM 738, LAX-PVG DL 77L, SHA-PEK CA 789, PEK-PVG CA A332, PVG-ORD MU 77W, ORD-MEX AM 738

RE: Where To Fly The DC-9 10 In The USA?

I just got through flying on one of NW DC9-10s N8911E. The pilot said that the DC9-10s will be gone by January or February 2005. It was a nice little plane. I have a trip report in the TR forum, and some pictures on www.myaviation.net. I flew it from GPT-MEM, but that was the last flight out of GPT the DC9-10 was gonna make. Now they are based up north in MSP and DTW. IT was a great little jet, and I enjoyed flying on it immensely. Get on one while you still can. NWA has not and will not even paint those in the new NWA livery.

So basically FL# 1667!!  Big thumbs up

EDIT: I remember a flight from MEM-STL that was a DC9-10 but IDK if that still operates.

UK_Dispatcher ,

Fly on a DC-9-10 while you have a chance! It was one of the most pleasurable flights I have ever had. I flew from LAX to PIT for the day, just to catch the PIT-DTW (NW1683) on the DC91. (Trust me, I would not do something like that normally, but I wanted to fly on one before they were gone.)

Happy flying across the pond and beyond.

I had the opportunity to jumpeast on a few DC-9-15F flights last week! What a great airplane, too bad they'll be retired soon...

I don't know any exact routes, but it generally seems to be a spare. Often substituted on light loads. The other day from DTW-LAN we switched from a -50 to -10.

I did the same thing myself back in April. I deviated a business trip to catch a NW DC9-14. The easiest was DTW-CLE-DTW and then connected onto another MD product, the DC10-30 back to the UK. All in all good value and a nice change to the normal Boeing/Aribus fare. I managed to fly in N8908E. One of the highlights was the reverse thrust push back from the gate on the DC9s.

managed to fly in N8908E

The same aircraft I flew on from DTW-TVC in late June. I was rather surprised by the reverse thrust push-back.

You can probably get a good answer if you tell me where you are planing to fly from, since DC-9 are used in many routes but mostly out of DTW.

Does NW still operate a DC-9 on the DTW-SBN route?

There might be a DC-9-10 on either the CMH-DTW or CMH-MEM route. I see one quite often around CMH.

W A R N I N G ...
NW will have a sched change in Sept right after Labor day and another one when the time changes(USA comes off daylight savings time). NW may have a model 10 scheduled for Aug 31 but come Sept 12, it may be an RJ or a model 30. They are also known to switch aircraft alot, especially on weekends when traffic to business centers are light, you can be booked on a model 30 but end up on a model 10.
So, don't book too far in advance of your model 10 trip. ALSO avoid the very last row in coach or you will be looking at Mr. Pratt and Mr. Whitney..take the next to last row on the model 10. I love the noise!!!

Well, thanks a million for all the info - looks like the DTW-TVC route is a good one. I have no set date at the moment, but should hopefully know in the next few weeks....

Can anyone tell me anything about Traverse City - any good bars etc....!?

Thanks Isitsafenow, I might just contact him.

Any DC-9 flight appeals to me - I've only ever flown on one - I think it was a DC-9 32 - it was on the BD MME-LHR route around 1989, but I was only 9yo!

I shall have to see what non-rev discounts we get on NW - not too many of us BD staff use NW, as their only UK-hub is LGW.

NWA also operates the -10 (Barbie Jet) on MSP-STL. It will be sad to see that bird go. Anyone know if its true the -40s will be the next of the wonderful DC-9s to leave the NWA family? Thankfully the last of the 9s is not set for retirement until 2020 and too bad the 717 will be out of production by then.

Slight setback: The carrier I work for does not have a staff travel / non-rev agreement with NW !!

We have one with just about every other U.S. major - why not Northwest?!

:-(

Does anyone else fly the DTW-TVC route, and how likely are NW to take an endorsed tkt? Can any NW employees help me??

IMO, Flying on the DC9-10 was a GREAT Experience. She took off like a rocket, and she didn't let anything slow her down for landing. She came in like a bird who spotted that big juicy worm right on the runway, and she landed smoothly. It will be a shame to see them go, and wish I could get another opportunity to fly on them (I flew the last D9C flight out of GPT I believe). After my flight, they were taking the -10s back up north so they could be closer to their home base. (MSP and DTW)

Midwest STILL HAS the DC9-30 (all of the -10s are gone now).

Take NW, but Midwest as well if you can (book in advance so you don't pay too much); they are ALL BIZ CLASS on aircraft operated by "signature service" (DON'T DO saver service...this is all COACH MD80s). Their DC9s (ALL 9's ARE SIGNATURE, NONE are in the 'saver' all-coach) will be the nicest one you've seen!  Smile

HOWEVER...WARNING, the 717 has just one more row than the -30 (88 Business Class on 717 vs. 84 with the -30) and they can sometimes put a 717 on a DC9-30 route! The 717's are all signature too; only the 80's are configured in either ALL-signature or ALL-saver.
Don't bring up the NW DC9's unless you have to!

Burnsie28 - I work for BD

Not being able to get my non-rev tkts is gonna pose a problem, I think - the only other alternative would be to get tkts issued on another carrier that operates on a NW DC-9 10 route, and hope NW take endorsed tkts. We are pretty flexible like that, generally. I can get non-revs on AA / UA / US / CO / HP / WN / DL - that I know of....

Any suggestions, anyone?!
