Why Isn't Skyteam Interested In Swiss?

Mon Jul 26, 2004 11:46 pm

I have asked this in other posts, but never got an answer: around all the talk of a possible collapse of LX after not having joined Oneworld as well as OS opposing their entry into Star, how come there is no talk about LX joining Skyteam?

Proximity of hubs (CDG-ZRH)? Can't really be an issue, AMS and CDG are just as close, and AMS is reaaaaaaaally big
Compatibility of networks? ZRH could be transformed into a good gateway into Eastern Europe, something like the OS of Skyteam. OK never really lived up to that
Other reasons?

Dunno, but I think SkyTeam is kinda crowded in Europe, think that right now they want partners in S.E. Asia and S.America.

But options that SkyTeam can take are:
Avianca
TAM

Simple, Swiss like Switzerland is an island in Europe. Because they are not part of the "European Union" they have very little to offer in Europe. There's nothing Swiss can offer that another EU carrier can't. More so now as the EU presses forward towards unification and centralization of everything relating to air travel. In my view they are a niche carrier to server the Swiss business community.

TAM will join when they open at least 10 more intl. routes.
AV will join after C11. For sure.

Also Swiss don't want to disclose their loyalty scheme customers with the alliances - this was one reason why oneworld couldn't agree with them about joining.

AF also has many flights into Switzerland, and they share many of Swiss' international routes, so there is not much of a need for Swiss.

Skyteam is chock full of european carriers, as well as US carriers. What it needs now are more Asian carriers to make it a truly effective worldwide marketing and revenue enhancing tool.

Airbazar
Switzerland did several contracts (Bilateral contracts) with the EU and Swiss carriers have quite a lot of rights in the EU.
I think you don't know how many pax are using ZRH as transit point.

Oneworld yes, but BA?

ANA
Swiss refused to disclose their loyalty scheme customers to BA because of the conditions given.

Mozart,
really? If you compare Eastern European destination network of OK and LX, there's nothing for LX to offer since they are completlely absent from the Baltic states, other Russian cities than Moscow as well as countries like Armenia, Georgia, etc.
I agree that SkyTeam desperately needs a carrier from SE Asia and South America to be truly global.

What really surprises me is how many partners Delta has, and I imagine that it is only a matter of time before they pull some of them into SkyTeam.
