Qantas Increases MEL-LAX Flights

Tue Jul 27, 2004 8:45 am

This is nothing but great news!

A slight but important increase....

QF744

Qantas said today it would increase its non-stop services between Melbourne
and Los Angeles from seven to nine flights each week.
Qantas Airlines Executive General Manager John Borghetti said the first of
the new services would commence on 6 November, 2004 and the second on 7 February, 2005.
"Under the new schedule, Qantas will operate 37 flights per week between
Australia and the USA - 30 of which will be non-stop services," Mr
Borghetti said.
"Qantas commenced services between Melbourne and Los Angeles (via Auckland) in October 1994, and has been offering non-stop services since October 1999. We are committed to continuing our substantial investment in this important market.

In the future, which market will be bigger for Qantas, the US or UK?

OK so what is this going to do to reports of incresed and increasing use of the 744ER's to Europe?

Makes it seem even more unlikely or can we expect more 744ER orders?

OK so what is this going to do to reports of incresed and increasing use of the 744ER's to Europe?

As far as i'm aware the only reason the 744ER's have been going LHR lately is because they have had skybeds fitted in them and thats only 2 of the 6 aircraft VH-OEF and VH-OEJ. Once all the 744's including the ER's have been refitted, they will go back on the LAX run.

I am guessing that they are dropping the second AKL-LAX service QF155/156 as this new service QF103/104 will operate on the same days Saturday and Monday. Though the AKL-LAX flights are run by 2 class aircraft.

Schedule is

MEL 1150 LAX 0700
LAX 2355 MEL 1005+2

All QF GE-Pacific 744s will be fitted with 64J skybeds instead of the normal 50 from now on so chances of seeing them in LHR will be very slim in the future.

OEJ/OEF will eventually be refitted with an extra 14 J seats.

So the 3 class 744s will be split once again all GEs to the USA and all RR to Asia/Europe.

Hope this helps.

Great news!

Those flights from MEL to LAX are always full or close to. That flights not only carries pax from Victoria, but also Tasmania and South Australia. So I can see why they would be full. It also means there is less chance of having to transit sydney  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

This is great news. I think the timing of these flights have been carefully scheduled to appeal to business travellers. MORE capacity is needed on this route as well as competition-airfares AUS-US are creeping up and are almost at an all-time-high as Qantas is raking it in.
When I say competition-i mean DECENT competition like VS or SQ. (NOT UA)

Cleary to keep out competition as well as increase capacity on the route.
I know that QF serves LAX and JFK, do they serve any other US ports besides HNL?

Given that the MEL-LAX flights are nearly always close to capacity, this increase is certainly welcome and needed. Most pax from ADL/HBA/PER etc would more prefer to transfer through MEL given the shorter and easier transfer time. I wouldnt think that QF would have much trouble operating double daily flights out of MEL at a profitiable level.

Cheers

It says QF will go double daily MEL-LAX within 12 months as well as daily on the HKG-LHR route by next year. QF would also like to add to the new BNE-LAX services in the future.

It looks like a 744ER order is the only option.

How many and how long???

Also will QF ever go back to daily LAX-JFK services as it used to be prior to 9/11?

Thanks

Yes, great news for Melbourne, this airport goes from strength to strength - with a huge increase in passenger numbers its great to see QF once again showing some (international) faith in the southern city!

I have also heard that Qantas is desperately looking for atleast 4 used B747-400's for immediate delivery, but is really struggling to find ones that suit! They desperately need them for their 11% increase in international operations over the next 12 months!

Why does QF not send the RR powered 744s to the US? Is it because of the higher thrust rating of the GEs?

The QF site is showing the new 103/104 service as being operated by 2 class 744's. Obvioulsy demand is there for a second service, but this demand doesnt carry across to the F cabin. It will be good to see some different QF 744's in MEL.

Being from PER i prefer to go via MEL when flying to LAX, but always via SYD on the way home, purely to avoid TBIT.

9V-SPJ The RR machines do go to LAX, simply because they don't have enough GE machines to take care of all the flights !! So unless they get some more GE powered machines then no matter what layout they are in you will get a mix of RR and GE machines on most routes, even though the GE's may be intended solely for the U.S.

How about BNE - LAX routes? Errr

The BNE services have recently been upgraded as well. Along with the daily one stop (AKL) service on this route, a 3 x weekly direct service has also been added.

Cheers

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

QF have updated the online timetable QF155/156 AKL-LAX-AKL dissapears.

And QF103/104 operates the same days as 155/156 SYD-MEL-LAX-MEL-SYD.

So it looks like QF103/104 will operate as a 2 class service and arrive and depart within a half hour of QF93/94.

This goes to show QF will need more 744s if they plan to make HKG-LHR daily and the new MEL-LAX daily all within 12 months.

Hope this helps.

I fail to see why QF schedules the flights within 30mins of each other... They do the same at SYD. Why not create a evening departure arriving at LAX mid afternoon. I understand Aircraft numbers and utilisation is a problem, but why put everybody out on flights withing a couple of hours of each other. Does it not make sense to anybody else??

On the otherhand, great to see QF expanding this popular service, now all they need is to have new destinations instead of just adding frequencies( I mean in the US and EU, as I am fully aware that they have been reinstating flights to Asian destinations)

How is UA doing on the route? They have been doing a single daily MEL service for a long time now.
I wonder if they would consider extending the SFO-SYD service down to MEL as well.

No way would they do that, the service to LAX has convienient connections to SFO, from what I have heard the loads aren't great and they can't pick up pax anyway in SYD to go to MEL except if they come off the other UA flight.

The UA839/UA840 both hub at Sydney, so Melbourne pax can connect at Sydney, staying on the same aircraft if they are going onto LAX and v.v. & it allows SFO pax to join UA839 in Syd & continue to Mel or use UA840 from Mel to Syd to join UA862? to SFO.

hope that clears it up? Also United have a very long association with both Melbourne & Sydney and are happy with loads from Melbourne. There is a great deal of business/high yield to/from the southern city.

Do QF's 744ERs have the new 777 style interior, Or do they still have the older look?
