I imagine that is just a normal weather delay. How do airlines handle flights that have been diverted?

I was on a UA flight to PHL that was diverted to ABE a few months ago due to low fuel. We had flown as north as Montreal to get around some t-storms after a 3hr delay leaving ORD....

During the stop, there was no gate for us to pull up to at ABE, so we were stuck on the plane. UA did send some people to get Subway sandwiches, and came through w/ more drinks. After 2 hrs, we flew the short flight down to PHL.
