Fate Of TWA 717s?

Thu Jul 29, 2004 2:35 pm

I understand that TWA had 30 717s which all eventually became AirTran's.

I assume American was operating them for at least a little while, no? How many of them were painted in AA colors?

If 9/11 had never happened and TWA had survived, I think they would have bought many many more 717s. The original order was 50 firm and 50 options, just like VJETs.

haha, 9/11 was not the reason TWA did not survive. in any case, sadly most of them are in the desert i believe.

(and pssst, don't call AirTran ValuJet)

VJET placed the original order for what was then the md95. As for the desert, I don't think there is one 717 out there. FL took almost all of the former TWA birds when they accelerated the dc-9 retirement in 2002. The rest went overseas.

None of the 717s were painted in full AA colors, but rather had the TWA/AA scheme. For those interested, the safety cards were marked "TWA" but also had "An American Airlines Company" markings.

The 717s and other TWA planes were most likely operating under the AA/TWA airline. I believe that it was only a few months ago that TWA was completely over. It was not mentioned that much on the news, but I remember a big topic about it.

True, the AA/TW merger was consummated about 2 months before 9/11. The original plan was to retain the TW brand (w/ the hybrid livery) for a couple of years. The economic downturn following 9/11 caused AA to scrap the TW brand altogether.

As it was stated previously, AA ditched the 717s because of the hideous lease rates that Boeing gave TW.
