New ATA Business Class

I recently returned from LAS on a TZ flight and saw a promotional video announcing premium "Business Class" service with 2 X 2 seating beginning this fall. I hadn't heard about this service before. What's the plan for this service, will it ultimately be offered system wide or just on select flights?

This subject had some very heated comments on it when it was first announced, as a memo was sent to the staff of ATA/TZ saying that employees would not be allowed to use the front end cabin, not sure if I got it totally right, though that was the general gist. If I remember right for a short while it was actually posted on ATA web site.

The planes will be out of service in September: 6 at a time, 3 being reconfigured and 3 more coming in as soon as those are complete.

That is just ridiculous.

What other US LCCs do not have a business/premium cabin? JetBlue, Song, and Southwest come to mind - should AirTran be on that list?

airTran has Business Class upgradeable for $25 one way or unlimited for A+ Rewards Elite Members.

Spirit also has a business class cabin on its fleet of MD-80s... it is called "Spirit Plus" and you can purchase upgrades at the gate, if seats are available.

Along with the new biz class will be the "Elite" flyer program. I believe it will start with the top 30,00 frequent flyers. These Elite passengers will be allowed to check-in the business class line as well as other perks. Training starts this week for station personnel on both programs.

airTran has Business Class upgradeable for $25

Now it's $35 a segment (each take off and landing) I always use it on flights longer then 1hour.

In response to Leelaw, all 737 and 757 aircraft are to be configured with business class. (And this is to start pretty soon). The L-1011 fleet most likely will not, primarily because they are busy doing charters.
Hope you get a chance to fly with us gain, we are excited about it.
Luv2fly, you got it right...employees will not be eligible to sit there. I guess a major complaint from passengers who pay for the upgrade on other airlines is that "there are employees sitting all around them talking shop, and they would just rather not hear it". SO that decision was made that all employees should just sit in coach, which is fine with me.

ATAflyer, having nonrevs in the Business cabin would also limit the number of upgrade opportunities for paying pax, as well!

I think ATA are going to have to do better than create a "business class" - this airline has a deliriously bad reputation, especially when it comes to aggressive and hostile cabin crew (Chicago-based are the worst). And some joker further down says it's a good idea that 'the help' are banished to the back of the plane, cos those important customers in the premium cabin don't like to hear airline staff talk shop! Yeah right! I've flown thousands of times in biz and first, and I've never noticed airline staff talking shop. How many non-rev staff are on any given flight? Unless there's a whole graduating class of junior first officers or whatever, the answer is generally between zero and two. And so what if they talk shop? How can you hear what people are talking about, across the aisle or from a row ahead? Is this the new normal in America? Everyone eavesdropping on each other? Sounds like a different (ex) superpower to me. This is complete nonsense.

Regarding Non-Reving in first cabin: as a frequent flyer on AA, NW, & UA I have been annoyed on a few occasions to discover pilots flying in first cabin when there were empty seats in economy, and I had been told at check-in that there weren't seats available for upgrade.

It looks like ATA will have between 12 and 16 BC seats available on its 73-8 and 75-2 A/C. The whole employee thing is a bit touchy but after seeing the way some of these young FA's behave even while the work, I see why the company has done it. ATA will really set themselves apart with all of these amenities they offer on their flights. No other LCC will compare to have BC seating, IFE, Meals for sale and oh yeah, no pillows and blankets!

No it won't... upgrades would be given to revenue passengers first- whether people believe it or not, rev. first, then non-rev.

pilots flying in first cabin when there were empty seats in economy, and I had been told at check-in that there weren't seats available for upgrade.

What happens often also is that F may be full at "check-in" but at the "cut-off" point, the seats are released back into the system (who hasn't checked in) and it's fair game for whomever is on the upgrade/non-rev list. When flying AA (if you are either G, PL, EP), asked to be placed on the UPG list regardless, so if something opens up, it's all yours.  Smile

Will the 753s get Business Class seats as well or are they doing too much Hawaii and charter work to be configured with fewer seats?

All of the 738's, 752's and 753's will receive the Biz Class cabin upgrade and each will have 12 seats.
35 years of American Trans Air/ATA Airlines, 1973-2008. A great little airline that will not be soon forgotten.

Actually AirTran's upgrade fees are changing from $35/$50 shorthaul/longhaul to $35/$50/$75 shorthaul/mediumhaul/longhaul. (Medium haul being DFW-BWI for instance, and long haul being ATL-SFO).

As for the no non-revs in business class thing, I still think it's ludicrous and a slap in the face to the employees of ATA. AirTran tried it when they first added business class, and it created the worst rift in employee/management relations in years. It was changed in just a few months.

Hooray for TZ! I have flown them several times out of MDW and had nothing but solicitous and friendly ground and inflight service. I hope they thrive. Remember other carriers have changed service perceptions as well. This introduction of C class is interesting as they are now trying to suck business travelers from the legacy carriers with perks. Of course premium cabins and LCCs don't appear to match. Time will tell.

Well maybe Cedarjet needs to come fly us sometime, this is an invitation to do so. Maybe I was unable to explain the policy re: nonrevs in business class seats, so will just add this: the original concerns of the nonrevs would be that seats would go empty while the nonrevs were denied boarding. (This was never to be the case. Instead, if seats are open in bus class after boarding complete, then full-fare customers could be asked forward, opening up coach seats for non-revs.)
This policy had nothing to do with 'eavesdrppping' or the like. I also have flown a considerable amount of miles both for work and play...many of them on other carriers in their First Cabins. The nonrevs can be picked-out whether in uniform or not. The business class is for paying customers, and that is okay. A coach seat will do nicely.

If I want to sit in Business class, I'll buy a ticket.

If I want to fly around for free, I'll sit on a jumpseat, in the lav, in a comfortable ATA coach class seat, or anywhere on the aircraft that will get me where I'd like to go.

It's really very simple: our customers pay our wages. They should sit in Business class and I should thank them for allowing me to have a wonderful job as I take my seat in coach.

Don't make an issue where truly none exists.

I just want to say that you have the most positive attitude about non-reving of anyone that I have seen on a.net.

If all airline employees had this attitude toward their customers, the skies would be a much nicer place to be!

Perks are good motivational gestures. Upgrades being one of them.

It doesn't cost the company anything and helps make employees happy and loyal. I think it is decent, especially when one considers the extremely low wages of most airline staff.

At my airline, we have a strict code of conduct for staff travelling in C-cl : dress nicely, be quiet and don't tell fellow passengers you're staff. If non-revs can stick to that, I don't know what the problem is.

Look for JetBlue to add a premium cabin before the EMB190s come on line.

I know there was a contract for the premium seats being discussed at Farnbourgh.
