Delta Returns Heritage Widget

Fri Jul 30, 2004 12:40 am

from Delta News Network:

"Based on employee feedback from roadshows with Jerry Grinstein, CEO, and the nostalgia around the 75th anniversary, Delta is replacing the current Widget with the traditional heritage design. Additional expenses are not expected because Widgets will be replaced during the painting process involved as aircraft cycle through heavy maintenance visits. The same will be true for paper products and stock material. When the items are replenished, the Widget will be replaced. The new-generation Widget will be phased out and replaced with the Heritage Widget throughout the system during the next few years. The flowing fabric design on the livery will not change."

This has been covered before, but I guess that this time it is "official".

I think that the curved widget is much better for their current scheme.

Yep...this is the real deal. I just saw an advertisement in the New Yorker. They are indeed going back to the old widget. I just have one question about this: When is Delta ever going to decide on a design and STICK TO IT????

This was discussed and we agreed that only the widget will be changed, not the whole livery. I'm glad the classic widget is back, though.

I think this is a good move by Jerry. It is a subtle way of telling the employees little things do matter. It also symbolicly seperates him from Leo. "Leo changed this, and now I'm putting it back." Jerry is an airplane guy who seems to care what people around him have to say. The interior mods will be the next step. Both moves should give the employees more pride in the airline, thus improving the customer experience.

I was talking to a friend, who is a CSR for DL in CVG. She said that a an internal memo said the company is changing back to the old widget because the current one looks like a frown.

Actually, when I was at PDX last year waiting for a flight to CVG. I noticed that all the Delta signs, logos, etc. were still from the now-classic widget era; including the block letters (in caps) spelling out DELTA. With this news, it looks like PDX won't have to change its signs at all.

The signs will eventually change. The old logo is coming back, but the "Delta" is no longer shown in all caps like it used to be...it has been capital "D" and lower case "elta" for several years now. So, the signs in PDX will change.

Excellent. Good for Delta. It's good to see some companies still have a sense of history and tradition.

I dont understand.

As I have come to know, there are three Delta liveries. 1962 which I know as old or widget, 1997 which I know as middle or Ron Allen colors, and the 2000 colors, knwon as new or Deltaflot in my head.

Can someone tell me what Delta is doing again in my own terms? Thanks.

I don't know what a rounded or curved widget is. What will the planes look like?

Phil...Okay...Delta will cont. to paint the planes in the Wavy Gravy/ Deltaflot Livery. So we will still cont. to see the beach towel tails....

The only change to the planes is the little triagle symbol in front of the word Delta on the planes...

it used to look like:

now the planes will look like:

(to see the difference look at the "widget" in front of the word Delta)

Its a very small change on the planes...one that most people won't hardly recognize....but all of the widgets will be changed like this in due process

I actually like the newer Widget. I thought that it looked like horizon if you were high enough up. But CEO's will do want CEO's want to do.

Yea! Seems trivial but it helps from inside that someone wants to make the employees understand he is hearing them and morale is important. The "Gay Pride flag " tail will stay for now(outside the airline some call it a beach towel or deltaflot) but as the planes come back thru for maintenance, the frowning widget will be replaced by the better one. They also have a retro scheme they are bouncing around that will put the spirit 767 to shame. It is a DC-7B scheme on a 767 or 777. It is GRAND!

On a sidenote: I was at DFW Monday and every Delta mainline plane parked at E had the newest color scheme.

So will the cool looking tail stay the same? I like that. It may not cost any more to change it when it comes into mx...however howmuch did it cost to come up with the idea to change it?

you're right, not too many folks will even know there is a change going on here.

personally, i wish airlines would keep at least 1 aircraft painted in a previous livery at all times. for example, why not have 1 UAL aircraft out there flying with their classic "Stars & Bars" livery and have 1 with the Saul Bass 80's scheme, etc... Continental could still have 1 bird out there with the classic black meatball scheme etc...

not sure this even belongs in this thread, but it made me think about old liveries.....

just my thoughts

It absolutely astounds me sometimes the priorties airlines choose to make, by changing something as simple as a widget. Yes, you and I and the other airline enthusiest notice, but by and large the general flying public could care less, why put so much expense and further more effort into it. The "Legacy" carriers have yet to learn the time will come when ethier drastic changes will need to be made like forgetting about a "widget" and focusing on profitability or the steam boat shall sink.

"The "Legacy" carriers have yet to learn the time will come when ethier drastic changes will need to be made..."

Have you not heard about what Delta is doing? They have been conducting a comprehensive review of their entire operation. The plan should be finalized in August and rolled out after that. As Grinstein said:

"Delta must transform itself and change the way we do business. But we do not intend to assume a low-cost carrier business model or continue to struggle through another few years in a traditional legacy carrier role. We are choosing instead to pursue a Delta solution, using the tools and resources unique to us."

It sounds like Delta is the only legacy carrier seriously looking at how to change and adapt rather than use a band-aid fix.

I don't think changing the Widget was aimed at the flying public. This was a gesture to the employees. Many people did not like the change to the frown. The wavy tail was bad enough.

I do like the idea about a retro jet in DC-7 colors.

jmhLUV2 fly...It cost nothing. It is a gesture to listen to the employees concerns. It is like changing a paint scheme. The planes have to be painted every few years so the next time they are due, it will be different. No cost change.......but Delta is a bad example of this because they paid a company 2.4 million for the "new look" 4 years ago instead of asking the employees "hey, lets have a contest to come up with a new paint scheme and the winner gets $10,000. Let see, 10k or 2.4 mil......what a difference. This is the problem Jerry wants to correct in the airline..at no cost too.

Ord guy.. you said it!!!!!!!!!

Cheers ......

Gimme some of that old time religion.

It is a DC-7B scheme on a 767 or 777. It is GRAND!

Hot damn I like the sound of that.

**A LITTLE OFF TOPIC, but here we go....***
I respect Delta wishes to honor its employees, this is good for moral. All I am saying is the last thing a company needs to be doing is changing its image every few years.
Not only Delta, but ALL the major US carriers must be focused on maxamizing profitability, and reducing cost where possible anywhere and everywhere.
Delta Stated:

"Delta must transform itself and change the way we do business. But we do not intend to assume a low-cost carrier business model...."

Let me ask you this, If you had the opportunity to speak with and learn valuable money making and personal success information from a self made millionaire, would you speak with him or her and would you entertain the information they provided you? I for one would.
So why in gods green earth do the legacy airlines not take notes and relize the discount carriers are operating in a way that yields profitiabilty...Delta and others know the
the LCC's are making money....alot of it!
The industry needs to remember things have changed alot in thirty years, people dont expect all the bells and whistles anymore....and for this I say if you want a reasonably priced seat with of course a little leg room, no harm in that, I say stream line alot of the domestic services, flights 2.5 hours or less....pretzels and a drink, up front about the same. International flights are of course different and should offer more.
The LCC's know all this and are thankful the majors somehow do not.
