Southwest's Flashing Landing Lights

Tue Feb 22, 2000 9:27 am

Recently I have seen several Southwest planes landing at DTW with their landing lights flashing alternately back and forth between the left and the right lights. Have seen it on a couple different series of 737's (200 + 500) and wonder if anyone knows the reason for this.

The aircraft have been modified to pulsate the landing lights so as to attract more attention to, and thus awareness of, the aircraft for collision avoidance.

Looks like it worked!

This exact topic has been discussed 3 times in the past 5 weeks. The last time this was brought up the 2 answers that were given were: 1.) they use the flashing lights at certain airports to scare the many birds away from the aircraft. Apparently this works very well. 2.) They do this to prolong the life of the lights by keeping them cooler than if they were on all of the time. The first answer came from airport employees at the airports where this occurs and the second answer came from 2 airline mechanics. I am just passing this on, I don't know either way, believe it or not.
