ATA To Add New Destination

Sun Aug 01, 2004 8:16 am

For obvious reasons, can't say which one - but sometime overnight a new city will be added to the growing list of ATA destinations. Something brand new and from Indianapolis  Wink/being sarcastic

Ohhh.. the obvious reason has me wondering... would it be in some sort of retaliation to NW? If that is the case.. then there are only 2 choices.. RDU or BDL..

if not, the only other obvious reason to me would be the Int'l flight to Germany...

If not either, then I am stumped...

RDU and BDL are pretty well covered by what they just received, apparently RDU got the flight banking on pharmaceutical traffic between the two cities...

I'll venture to say SAN..

How is San Diego obvious? I must be missing something. And I do have to agree... RDU-IND is a serious Eli Lily route...

I read an earlier post that Berlin Germany said they were working out something with an american carrier, they didnt specify who though. Alot of attention was drawn to ATA

Somehow I doubt that Berlin would be inaugurated from IND. First off, TZ hasn't the equipment to operate it non-stop. Possibly a one-stop in BWI or EWR or BOS, from MDW, would do it, though. My bet is on RDU.

What is the point of this post if you are not going to at least give some direction... North, South, East, West?

could it be STL?

Southwest dropped this route back in 2001, and AA has prop flights STL-IND, could ATA fill 1 738 STL-IND?

Otherwise....BWI sounds like a nice city to get into.

Far south eh...

Aruba and Cancun already covered by ATA, and the new city is "brand new"
Some other Carribean island? Or maybe Costa Rica?

I see no business destinations south of Miami that would benefit from a flight to IND.

Was just looking on Amadeus.net (which already has the route showing) and its an interesting circle trip that I never seen us do before that includes another city ATA already serves. Meaning you will have to make one stop on the return from this new city (or one stop on the way to the old city).

Is it SJU? Just found that with a non-stop on the way down, and a one stop the way back.

Yea, I thought that was a bit of a surprise too. Ambassadair fills many STT flights every year and I suppose taking that into consideration and combining this with SJU it should be a success.

ATA are in intense discussions with the german city of Cologne as advised by the airport's spokesman. They should become the airport's first long-distance LCC ,with some of the tickets starting at 99 Euros/segment.Possible destinations in the US are not yet clear but Philadelphia and/or Baltimore could be among the destinations.

ATA needs to get things cleared up here at home before jumping the big pond. This includes getting the F/As into an agreement for concessions and figuring out a 100-seat aircraft (F/A agreement first). They also need to take a JetBlue approach to international flying...skim the traffic off of higher yeilding & high volume routes. I'm not saying go right after New York to London...but that seems a bit better than Cologne.

Maybe Cologne Airport are sweetening the deal a bit ,since they are desperate to have interconti trafic...

The old Midway Airlines used to serve STT from MDW with a stop in MIA. MDW-MIA-STT-STX-MIA-MDW on a 737-200. It was, I believe, a former Air Florida route that they picked up when they bought Air Florida. I think it was profitable for them (and popular from Chicago). Interesting to see that it's running from IND. Of course, a once-weekly flight isn't really much service as much as it's just another route that is likely to be substantially presold to some tour operator. Regardless, insofar as I think of ATA as ML's successor in a lot of ways at MDW (i.e. the route structure -- except they've never served DTW the way that ML did), it's a nice addition.

All the best,

Bill

PS I see that the once-weekly LGA-SFO service is well-sold recently. Too bad they don't run it every day; I'd take it every time I went to SFO, as LGA is far and away my preferred NYC airport.

There is a distance cap for flying to and from LGA which is lifted on the weekends - allowing for the one-of-a-kind SFO-LGA service. Shame that ATA can't convince LGA to lift that cap for weekdays.

- Is that something like the deal at Love Field where the flights into and out of Love are restricted to a limited number of states?

I am surprised that ATA doesn't have flights between DTW and MDW or IND.

Does anyone else fly DTW-MDW besides Northwest and Southwest? I remember at one time Spirit flew the route and Pro Air flew it from DET.

You would think ATA would want some payback on Northwest by offering direct flights to DTW from MDW and IND.

Sort of. While DAL is limited to flight within Texas and surrounding states, LGA has a perimeter in which no flights can fly outside of on weekdays. I want to say it's something like 1200 miles, which is not too bad as it includes most of the East Coast and much of the midwest as well. However, the restrictions are lifted for the weekend. Not sure of the reasons, but I'm sure one of them is to prevent the airlines from trying to a) saturate the airport with more traffic, and b) keep the longer flights at JFK and EWR, which are better equipped to handle those flights.

I just don't see RDU in the picture. ATA is already in CLT, which just makes me think that they aren't looking in the Carolinas market. If I were to make a guess, I'd say somewhere west or in the Northeast. Just my two cents.

ATA serves Detroit just fine now through FNT and TOL. One of their key components of keeping their CASM among the lowest in the industry, is to keep their planes in the air longer and over longer routes. PIT was a brief deviation from that rule. If you see an ATA plane in DTW for anything buy a charter (or diversion) I would be extremely shocked.

The other key element when looking at Detroit to Chicago...just look at how many players are on the field already. Northwest, United, American, and Southwest all have significant presences on the route. Every other airline that has tried to penetrate this has failed at doing so...ProAir, Spirit, Chautauqua (as USX), etc.

EXCELLENT NEWS FOR THE PEOPLE OF THE VIRGIN ISLANDS!!!! The return of the LCC's! Yes, we used to have Midway with their 737's, miss 'em. The majors have had their strangle hold over us for way too long! Delta, USAirways, Continental, United and especially AA/Eagle! I was glad to hear ATA started service to San Juan several years ago and secretly hoped that they would expand over to the V.I. Maybe this could be the start of a trend for others to consider. (i.e Spirit from FLL, or perhaps JetBlue from JFK)  Big thumbs up

The amount of gate space at RDU may rule RDU out of running. Though there is good demand for the RDU-IND, proved by Midway. RDU is too congested at its existing facilities for now, especially with construction going on.

To bad ATA picked a busy news day in Indy to unveil this. After all the bad press in IND lately about the FA situation, it would have helped them. Instead it comes out the same day that the mayor announces he wants to shut down the police department....no room for ATA news today.

Why would ATA not launch a flight like this from LGA? Saturday only would do well. The LGA-SFO-HNL is always 90-99% full. LGA begs for more non-stops other than IND and MDW. Someone tell those people that we want to fly ATA without going to MDW already. We had the PIE flight which was great but of course the cancel it when I was most looking forward to having that option this winter. Even if they did a LGA-PIE-LAS or LGA-MIA or LGA-POS on Saturday something. I know the planes sit around on Saturdays, why would they not fly them? Adding Saturday service from IND-STT is no big deal. It is seasonal and once weekly that is like 16 or so flights over the period, big whoppie! No wonder they are in the trouble they are in, poor decisions.
