US Airways To Cut PIT-IAH

Sun Aug 01, 2004 11:03 am

I don't know if this has been mentioned here yet (I haven't seen it), but, effective Oct. 3, US Airways will discontinue three daily 737-300's between Pittsburgh (PIT) and Houston's Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH). The last day for the service is Sat., Oct. 2.

US Airways will continue to serve IAH with four daily flights from each CLT and PHL.

...I wonder if CO will increase service.

As of now, no.

On weekdays, PHL-IAH will remain 4x Embraer 170 and CLT-IAH will be 3x 737-300 and 1x Embraer 170.

On another note, this is the first mainline cut at PIT US Airways has made since the reduced schedule began taking place. All the current cities cut (FWA, SBN, TOL, MSP, BKW, BLF, HTS, etc.) have been Express.

It's not horribly surprising that US is cutting PIT-IAH as connecting through CLT or PHL (or even ORD on UA) would not add a horrible amount of travel time for most of the traffic that US carries. I wouldn't be surprised to see US try flying from IAH to LGA or DCA (IAH is outside the perimeter for DCA) as PIT gets further downsized. IAH is a pretty big O&D market to only have one airline on these routes.

Not a surprising cut at all... the most recent cuts seem to focus on cutting service to hubs/major operations of other airlines. Note that MKE (head to head competition with YX), MEM (NW), MSP (NW), and now IAH (CO) have already been cut. I don't think that you'd have to go that far out on a limb to see PIT-DEN cut, now that UA will operate the flight. Other possible cuts that wouldn't surprise me include PIT-CLE, PIT-DTW, PIT-DFW, and PIT-CVG.

To me, this looks like a version of the strategy AA is using at STL, except instead of WN, US drops flights where they compete head-to-head with every other major. Not a bad idea... cash-cow flights to CHI, NYC, and LAX remain, but why fight against NW between PIT and MSP when you have to fight to stay alive?
