Qantas 747 - 300's

Sun Aug 01, 2004 1:15 pm

Hello,

QF still have 2 x 743's in storage which are planned to return to service post upgrade over the next 6 or so months.

Where do you think they will be deployed. With the International A333's coming on line what use will they have for these 2 additional 743's.

I am thinking they could use 1 to replace the 2 x daily Cairns to Narita 767 services.

That would still leave 1 to place.

From what I understand the existing 743's are used as follows:-

1 x 743 for Brisbane to Singapore (Daily)
2 x 743 for Sydney to Narita (Daily) (Also used for 1 x daily Syd to Auckland)
1x 743 for Sydney to Manila and Honolulu

They can't really use them to replace any 744 services as they will not have the skybed.

Any comments would be appreciated.

A bit slight off topic here, Is there any chance of QF re-introducing QF41/QF42. Sydney- Jakarta- Singapore route ?

Thanks

Sr 103 - Thanks ... I forgot about that one. I guess then they really only have 1 to place and it would make sense to deploy it on the Cairns to Narita route to free up the 2 x 767' sservices which depart within an hour of each other.

9V-SVC - Not sure about that. I would say the yields and load on the singapore to Jakarta leg would be pretty poor. It may be gone forever.

QF185 SYD-CHC-SYD on a Saturday is a 743 and I think the 743 still flies to AKL but I'm not 100% sure on that

Qantaspower has already said that the B743 operates a daily flight to AKL

I really do think that more B747 need to be deployed on route to Japan as 10 hrs + on a B767 is not all that glorious.

But I guess the load to Japan is not too great for an upgrade to 747 perhaps ? I heard that the A330-300 will be taking over the Japan route.

Really i always thought that loads between the two countries were very high due to the massive amount of tourism between Australia and Japan. Can anyone tell us how the loads are?

You will find out that some services to Japan could be upgraded from the 767 to 743 down the track as it was reported in Australian Aviation that Qantas was awarded a 20% increase in capacity from Australia to Japan.

Thus you could well see some of the following be upgraded MEL-TYO, SYD-CNR-TYO or SYD-CNS (day ops flight).

Or the additional cpacity could be for expansion for AO as well.

I think that the reason for two daily 767s from CNS to NRT is that the landing slots for these flights were allocated to the 2nd runway at NRT which currently is not long enough to take a fully laden 743.
QF has previously indicated to the International Air Services Commission that it would probably combine these two flights into a single 743 service once the extension to the 2nd runway, which, I gather, is currenty in progress, is completed.

I was under the impression that the remaining 2 743's would be returned to service on the Mumbai and Shanghai services later this year.

Further to my earlier post, here is the link to the determination (in connection with the Japan route) handed down by the I.A.S.C. earlier this year which mentions the plan by QF to substitute, by end 2005, a 743 for its 2 767s on the CNS-NRT route.

http://www.iasc.gov.au/pubs/2004iasc202.pdf

As far as the service to Shanghai is concerned, I believe that the plan is to fly the 330s on this route.

the last time QF made an announcement about Mumbai, it said they would use A330-300s on the route; as is the case with Shanghai..

QF744,

QF have only stated that 747-300's would operate the mumbai route. No mention of the A330

The plan for this route has always been for it to be operated by 743's. The current QF timetable also confirms this. Shanghai will be A333.

They are -EBV and EBW. EBW has been moved into the hangers in preperation for a return to service.

The 743 only flies to AKL 3x weekly now on Friday, Sunday and Monday and Christchurch on Saturday.

QF's website has SYD-Mumbai listed as 12:50 which seems rather long for a 743! A A333 wouldn't fly for anywhere near that long!

I heard AB) (MNL / RPLL), Philippines">MNL would go to A330's sometime, is this correct?

When will the 743's be retired, I heard by next year, is that true? And what will they be replaced with? More 744's or 333's?

The 743's will be around for another 5-6 years. They have just spent tens of millions of $$$$ upgrading them. This not only includes the interiors with PTV's etc but major major techinal and engineering upgrades.

They will start to be phased out when QF gets a decent number of A380's.

LONG LIVE THE 747-300!!

The cost of a complete upgrade including cabin/interiors/IFE/cockpit ect is around 100 million per aircraft.

So they won't be going in the next few years thats for sure.

Qantas management should be horse whipped for abandoning SFO-SYD to United. Do they really think we San Francisco people are going to fly to LAX just to fly Qantas? I hope SIA flies the route and makes Qantas pay for that lousy decision...

They are most definitely using 743's on the SYD-BOM route. I'm booked on one in December.  Smile/happy/getting dizzy ZK-NBT, QF's first one stop service to LON was routed LON-BOM-SYD with a 743. Don't forget NZ used to fly the 742's AKL-LAX, a similar lenght of journey, non stop. My longest 743 flight was on SAA, about 13-14 hours around the bulge of Africa during the apartheid era.

The last time I flew on a QF 743 was on an upgraded one. The crew remarked the new mood enhancing lighting made the Orange juice look funny. One stewardess even asked me to hold the glass of juice up to the natural light. She was worried it was a bit off until she saw it change back to a more normal colour in sunlight. Ah, the wonders of technology, eh?

Does anyone know if Nalanji Dreaming is still flying?

Dbba: A lot of people are willing to connect through LAX just to fly QF. It's why the mid-morning LAX-SFO and evening SFO-LAX flights are virtually QF shuttles.

It's not rare for an MD80 to be half-filled with QF pax.

QF have always said they will be using the 200s to Bombay. I hope they haven't changed that decision. They used to fly 767s before the suspended the route, but that was via Singapore. Brilliant service on that route, but I never cared for the 67s - horrid aircraft, in my view.

QF have always said they will be using the 200s to Bombay.

QF don't have any 742's left.

Don't forget NZ used to fly the 742's AKL-LAX, a similar lenght of journey, non stop.

Yes, the 742 has more range than the 743.
