Delta Pulling Out Of DFW?

Sun Aug 01, 2004 1:31 pm

Until I see confirmation it's still a rumor but this came from someone (whom I will not say) I trust. Apparently by the end of the summer, Delta will be completely shutting down it's hub at DFW. No idea what will be left of the hub... flights to ATL, SLC and CVG only? Will DFW become a focus city? My big concern, as dumb as it may sound, is what will happen to the ASA operation there? ASA currently flies CRP-DFW and I would REALLY hate to see them drop the route. CRP needs all the air service it can get and this doesn't bode well at all for that particular route.  Sad I fly AA and prefer them but am still sad to see Delta leaving... I always liked knowing I had an option at DFW and used Delta on quite a few occasions through there.

[Edit : I did another search (just on Delta this time with no DFW) and found a topic that somewhat covers this but only says DL will be dropping some mainline flights and NOT closing down the hub... perhaps he was being overdramatic. I hope so. I also recall him saying the M90s were to go... so my apologies for rehashing a topic.]

Yeah, hopefully AA will get rid of 5-6 RJ's here in LIT and replace them with mainline and maybe DL will increase their presence in SLC.

I hope so. I agree with Squirrel83. I don't want AA to have any competition at DFW so they can basically charge any fare they want and fleece the locals more than they already do!

If DL goes from DFW, I suspect that you will see a big Airtran buildup there.

The mental giants speak!

1. AirTran is already looking at DFW.
2. DL won't be pulling out.

Since DL has been incrementally shrinking its DFW hub for the past 10 years, they may as well stop forestalling the inevitable outcome of the direction they have been taking at DFW and end their Big-D hub sooner rather than later.

Sorry, Squirrely, but AirTran already has expanded here. We've got two new destinations this summer. We now have FL service to five cities nonstop.
I think AirTran will expand here BIG TIME if Delta falls away.
Delta WAS big here- this was their territory- in the eighties and early nineties. Not anymore.

"2. DL won't be pulling out."

Depending on how things continue to progress, they may not have a choice. Very short-sighted statement.

Squirell83,
So how will nearly bankrupt American stop profitable AirTran from expanding? Americans predatory past has caught up to them too many times now, both in court, and in their pocket book. Yeah, they ran Legend out of Dallas Love, but it cost them $400,000 a day to do it. That was 3 years ago, and Legend was still trying to make their first profit. AirTran is healthy and profitable. American is, ah, ah, hum, American is in no position to pick a fight with anyone.
I don't understand everything I don't know about this.

With the impending restructing of the entire airline, I would not be surprised if they do downsize DFW into more of a focus city than an actual Delta hub. Whether Delta Connection ops are affected is another thing, especially with Grinstein publicly stated his view on long RJ (over 2 hours) flights; ASA flies a number of RJ flights out of DFW over two hours long. With AirTran now making inroads @ DFW, they stand to gain the most by a DL downsizing @ DFW. American has the bulk of the market out of DFW, Delta is slipping because they downgraded a number of mainline routes to CRJs, and AirTran this year went from having flights to just ATL to where they now offer service to LAX, LAS, MCO, & BWI, and who knows what cities they add service to next. DFW is an ideal location for a hub for AirTran due to its' central location, and the added bonus of being within range with the 717 for nearly all of AirTran's stations.

Delta is going to shutdown one of there hubs, and while SLC may be the obvious one (I doubt Grinstein would do that, with the it being the only remnant of Western's ops still around from the merger), DFW is inbetween ATL and SLC, so they may just cut it out.

Spree34,

Out of the "big six", American is in the best position to pick a fight with someone. They actually turned a profit, although a small one, something that is incredibly rare these days. Look at NW's financial shape, considerably worse than that of AA and they got in a turf war with F9 and now I guess DH at LAN (even though it really isn't their turf). If AA feels that they need to get into a turf war if it were to help their future, I'm sure they would.

"I would not be surprised if they do downsize DFW into more of a focus city than an actual Delta hub."

While Delta Connection offers a hub at DFW, I don't feel Delta mainline does have a hub there any longer. They only have around 50 mainline flights a day, not really a hub in my opinion.

"...while SLC may be the obvious one (I doubt Grinstein would do that, with the it being the only remnant of Western's ops still around from the merger)...

I highly doubt Grinstein is going to let sentimental thoughts get in the way of axing SLC as a hub. I'm not saying SLC will be downsized further, but if it stays or goes depends upon finances and not personal reasons.

If AirTran is to even "try" and compete with AA in DFW they have got to try and increase their service levels to a great degree. Their service on-board just sucks, compared to AA's and trust me, I am not a fan of AA, at all.

Plus, they don't even have curbside baggage check-in downstairs. I told upper management about these problems when I was doing some consulting work for them as they started to increase their operations here in DFW. My suggestions fell on deaf ears................

They (AirTran) think that low-fares are the "only" way to compete and to hell with good customer service on board and on the ground. They have a good staff at DFW, that is not what I am talking about. I'm talking about the lack of service during the flight and no thoughts whatsoever about adding curbside check-in at DFW. If they want to compete with AA, at all, and try and get some of the corporate ($$$$) market, they need to pull their heads out of their a**es.............

Nearly bankrupt? Who are you kidding? Out of the six cartel carriers, American, who reported a profit (small, but a profit none the less) is considered to be the healthiest after the recent quarterly results.

I sure hope Delta does not pull out of DFW. They help keep AA in check. It's almost every weekend that you get great deals from NYC to DFW. By Delta pulling out, it will just cause prices to sky-rocket. It would not be a bad idea that AA move into ATL though. That will help keep Delta in check.

AA already has a decent presence at ATL. It's nothing compared to DLs (hello, biggest hub in the system?) but their five gates stay quite busy and ATL-MIA fares ain't cheap.

Yeah Travatl, very bad terms.

They lied to me about my salary and benefits.............
They came up about $6000.00 short on what I told them was my required salary.............I don't like being lied to.

They just don't have their act together if you ask me.
I gave them a ton of suggestions in ways they need to improve their act here in the DFW area, they didn't seem to care. They seem to think that low-cost is what is going to get them a presence here at DFW. I don't care how low your fares are, if you have shi**y service, people, especially corporate customers will not come back............

All they cared about was getting my corporate database..............

I have a list of over 250 corporate contacts within the DFW area from my previous jobs.........they wanted me to hand that over to them.......

I don't think so............

Actually I've heard this 'rumor' as well. It makes sense though for them to do this now because Continental is in an alliance with DL.....IAH isn't too far down the road from DFW........guess we'll wait and see......!

There was an article in a recent issue of Business Week that said DL may very have to close a hub as part of a plan to avoid bankruptcy, and the most likely hub would be DFW.

AA started to run DL out of DFW about 10 years ago. AA used to have 12 or 14 roundtrips between ORD and DFW. DL had 6. As AA gradually increased the roundtrips to 23, DL's went from 6 to 4 to 2 to 1 to 0.

They've tried RJ service, but that is being dropped.

I was in SAT about 8 years ago and noticed that AA had 3 times as many flights to DFW as DL.

DL simply can't compete out of Texas with AA, WN, and CO.

DL would be better off closing DFW and increasing service out of SLC. One time, I knew I would have to fly to SEA out of ORD at the very last minute. Despite 4 flights out of ORD for SEA, only 1 of them had a connection to SEA.

Every UA flight for DEN and every NW flight out of MDW and ORD for MSP made connections for SEA. Even HP offered more connections when adding PHX and LAS together.
