SAA Expands Service!

Tue Aug 03, 2004 3:11 am

In a recent article from CNN, South African Airways is now expanding to cover nearly all countries in central Africa, a move that will greatly increase the accessibility of the continent:

Ahh, Zimbabwe...here I come!  Big thumbs up

Usnseallt82:

BA already has service to Harare. Why you would want to go there is another story. Last time I was in JNB (April), I saw nothing but lots of people leaving HRE and on planes going, well, anywhere else, and not many people headed the other way.

Will SAA ever serve a North African destination like Cairo, Casablanca or Tunis?

Yes. And they all had red Zimbabwean passports. My LX flight to ZRH had tons of them.

Ditto on my SA flight to PER. There were more people with Zim passports than South Africans and Aussies!

Interesting comments about Zimbabwe. SAA have been flying there for years. My first long haul flight was on an SAA 747 out of Harare, then Salisbury, on the way to London. It was during the worst of the 1970's tensions. (Some things never seem to change in Africa.)

Sadly the flow of people wanting to leave Zimbabwe is all too real. Given the fuel shortages, food shortages and genreal air of unease, I'd carefully consider which parts of Zimbabwe you'll be going to usnseallt82 if you are planning a trip. Even my family have advised me to reconsider a trip back to see them. Still the area around Victoria Falls is a lot safer.

I've often flown the Harare-Jo'burg route on SAA and the current schedules mean that the daily inbound BA flight passes close to the outbound SAA flight. The pilots often point each other out.
