AF-Why No A340-600

AF Operates the A340-300 and it would have been a dead give-a-way to assume that they operate the -600's so Why don't they?

AF prefers the 777 for their premium routes, and AF also didn't wish to add the Rolls-Royce product to their lineup.

This has been argued so many times it hurts. Nobody will know the real answer, and there are a lot of guesses.

The bottom line is that they liked the 772, and they wanted to keep their Snecma engine relationship.

Engines are a *huge* part of aircraft orders. The IAE Superfan fiasco was the reason NW turned down the A340, and lead to the CFM56 order for the A320, possilby out of spite. Don't underestimate the choice of engines as they are the single most important option once an airframe has been selected.

SNECMA are partners on many if not all GE products, SNECMA is a French company, ergo GE90 engines.

SNECMA are a risk sharing partner on the GE90/777 as well.

hence...

A32X - CFM56
A330 - CF6
A340 - CFM56
A380 - GP7200
737 - CFM56
747 - CF6
777 - GE90

You can't blame them for keeping it simple and having one engine source, especially one that is employing and investing in France. Same with BA and their mainly Rolls or Rolls-partner fleet.

The GE partnership has made boatloads of money for the French economy.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

Don't forget AF's large pre-existing deposit with Boeing and GE.

I think the AF livery looks very chic on their 772's and 773's...much better than on the 343's.

So If I own a major airline and lets say I want a BWB and the only I only have one engine type/Will the same thing occur again like the a340?)

The A346 is a competitor of the 773 and the 744. Seeing as AF has both fleet types, it would not be logical to get the A346 (especially when you hear that the aircraft has been underperforming)

Now, AF has more than enough long haul planes...getting the 346 would be just an excess with so many 777's, 747's, 343's and 330's.

Wrong. AF has a lack of long-haulers. It would be redundant to operate the 346 alongside the 343, 744, 772, and 773. AF is centralizing it's long-haul operations on the three aforementioned models, with four subtypes. The A346 is simply not needed in their fleet- it would add another sub-type and another engine type, and AF just does not foresee that as a good investment, hence the order for the 773ER. It added little complexity when compared to the complexity the 346 would've added. Simple as that.

Sad as it can be, AF doesn´t operate RR powered planes, and for them it must be a pretty good reason, not satisfactory for us though!!
