Wow. That's more new service at one time than they have ever announced. Looks like Florida gets the majority of the new flights. Especially TPA.

Those non-stoppers to Florida are great news for ROC! Just a few more dots are now connected in the grand scheme of the airline world. The days of ROC area travelers flying out of Buffalo are pretty much over.

Wow....*both* FLL and TPA out of ROC. If FL keeps all current dailies at ROC, that means *nine* dailies by Christmas. They're not up on reservations yet but the press release gives schedules for both. JetBlue won't be happy, because they've said they want to offer ROC-Florida nonstops once the EMB-190's arrive. AirTran's beating them to the punch. These flights are long overdue; Northeastern cities the size of the Upstate markets should easily support more Florida nonstops than just the one daily to MCO (or SFB in SYR's case).

On top of Southwest's BUF-TPA plans, this has been a good week for Upstate. If TMA did as well with their SYR-FLL nonstops last winter as our Syracusians say, that one will probably come back as well.

I hope this finally leads them to do something with the route map on the website. It's already nearly unusable.. adding more lines is going to make it impossible.

Do any of you Citrus employees have an internal communication tool to suggest something along these lines?

I can tell you, Ryan and those are very good news for FL and make expansion more new service from FLL-ROC, FNT & DAY. This is the first time for new flight to ROC & DAY. I know NW is already service with Saturday only flight to FNT. This is good example need to make more flight out of FLL. It is make boost up for during with the winter flight.

So Dayton and Rochester get N/S to FLL but, apparently MCI can not support that route. It still baffles me that no carrier is willing to pick up MCI to either MIA or FLL. Can anyone explain the logic here?

The new DAY flights should be supported quite well with people travelling from Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky, Columbus, and Eastern Indiana. Delta is the largest carrier here right now.....many of their pax come up from Cincinnati(cause the fares out of Cincy are excessive). Between FL and DL there are 13 flights a day to ATL. So......I'm sure these new flights will do quite well.

I can tell you, Blhp68 and NJ is already files out of FLL-MCI before from 2 years ago and went out of the business with Vanguard on their flight to FLL before. It is make good supports on their service to FLL before.

Absolutely...the DAY flights should do awesome. Especially with Winter coming and no low-fare competition in CVG. CMH has good fares, but the drive is a bit much from both CVG and DAY.

FNT = Flint, Michigan.

Hell if this winter is as bad as the last years... those flights from Upstate NY will be pretty damn full going down to Florida.

ScottysAir,

From what I have heard FLL and DEN were NJ's most profitable routes. My only guess is that the yield is bad from MCI, which is why there is no service. So maybe if the economy wasnt so bad then we might see more N/S from MCI to southern Florida.

I believe this is only the beginning of some pretty big expansion. Most of the deliverys right now are replacing rjs and Ryan 320s. I think there is a net addition to the fleet of 5 or 6 jets by year end. Next year they are taking on at least 6 more 717s and 12 or 13 737s with no replacements. You will be seeing alot of these new service announcements next year.

They have had very early discussions with the town of Islip about perhaps 1-2 ISP-DFW flights. Could a 717 do this , or would they need the 73NG??
I was @ ISP today for the SW reminal opening, and there are several gates open as of today.

I hope so, I want to get on one, and I usually end up on UAL through DEN or IAD, tha range is the question. I remember B6 told me they chose the E190 over the 717 strictly because of range.

Just checked the timetables and DFW-LGA is 1378 miles, so yes a 717 could make it, but it would be on outer boundry. Looks like 13 nonstops on AA and 3 on DL. If the slots and gates were available, I would think they would make more money at LGA.

This isn't earth-shattering news by any means, but FL started its 5th ATL-MSY nonstop a month early. The inagural flight was yesterday. I'd like to see them add a nonstop to BWI eventually as WN only offers one.

Quickmover, I think that is why they may try ISP, there is a market here, SW does not do Dallas from here without 115 stops.

From what I have heard FLL and DEN were NJ's most profitable routes. My only guess is that the yield is bad from MCI, which is why there is no service. So maybe if the economy wasnt so bad then we might see more N/S from MCI to southern Florida.

Two things:

1) The economy is doing just fine, thank you. 3.2% growth is much better than what we were experiencing at the end of the Clinton Administration, and is some of the best growth we've seen since. I think the worst thing our economy suffers from right now is high fuel prices.

2) Yields to Florida are constantly low. Florida is a tourist destination with tourist fares. Yields from MCI were just fine under NJ. Good enough, in fact, to see 3x daily in the August, 2002 schedule (that never happened).

I think FL could make money on MCI-Florida n/s routes, 2x daily to MCO and FLL. They just see better opportunities elsewhere, just like PHL.

They have had very early discussions with the town of Islip about perhaps 1-2 ISP-DFW flights. Could a 717 do this , or would they need the 73NG??

The distance between Dallas, TX and Islip, NY is 1,409 miles (2,268 km).

I don't think FL has any HGW 717s. Since this is on the extreme limit of the 717's range, I think this would have to be 73Gs...

All of Airtrans 717's are the HGW(121,000 pounds)BUT they do not have the larger fuel tanks that the HGW come with. Airtrans 717s fuel capacity is 24,609 pounds vs the 29,000 pounds on the HGW version.

I thought the same thing Tommy. I was expecting an outside chance at maybe CAK - DFW twice daily or something. I would think something to the west for FL would do them well.

Florida starts to pick up around when these flights start. They are probably trying to take advantage of that. I bet that before year end, when the spring schedules are announced, we will see more DFW flying and more east west flying. Of course, if a carrier goes out of business or pulls a hub somewhere, schedules could change quickly.

Indeed. Ship 302 should be coming on or around 8/16. 303 on or around 9/7 and 304 on or around 9/17. Also, we have a new 717 being delivered today. Ship 742 (N892AT) is scheduled to fly LGB-MCO this afternoon. Ship 743 should be coming in mid-October.

The 717 deliveries are just about always nonstop, as the only people on board are the pilots, and with a full tank and an empty a/c, you have greater range on the a/c. AirTran's been doing these nonstop delivery flights ever since the second 717 delivery back in September 1999.

I am surprised at no announcement for new MSP service. I know that FL has been looking at adding flights. MKE-RSW gives me hope that eventually there could be a MSP-RSW.

I fly to Ft. Myers every six months or so. Hopefully FL will be able to take advantage even more once that new terminal opens.  Big thumbs up

FBOWeb is showing 742, filed as flight 8742, going from LGB to MCO, which is about 2,200 nm. The above note says that FL's are HGW's but have the tanks of the BGW. The BGW only has a range of 1,430 and the HGW has a range of 2,060. So either they put ferry tanks in her or FL's 717s are HGW all the way. Does anyone know which is the case?

I sure wish they would challenge DL on the PVD ATL route. DL operates 5 daily flights and in Winter mostly 757-200s, even 767-300s at peak times. They charge almost $600 for a business traveler's unrestricted fare vs. $212 @ BOS and the high 2s at both BDL and MHT. Time for an alternative as these flights are almost always jammin' mon!. Not sure where a spot could be had at PVD though.

I see they aren't proposing any service from GPT to Beau Rivage. Doesn't Mirage Resorts think that a GPT-LAS, LAS-GPT would be a good route. It would be FULL of passengers travelling from Casino to Casino. They could use the 737 for that route. Any new GPT news coming?

This is great news for Ft. Lauderdale. The Dayton and Rochester service represent new non-stop service routes (even though American Eagle will be launching Miami-Dayton this winter too). It is about time somebody exploits the huge market between South Florida and New York state (not just City)!

So Dayton and Rochester get N/S to FLL but, apparently MCI can not support that route. It still baffles me that no carrier is willing to pick up MCI to either MIA or FLL. Can anyone explain the logic here?

I can tell you that MIA-MCI is strongly being considered for a launch by AA this winter. It would be a daily MD80.

It's about time TPA service increased; even if it isn't until Dec. This summer is very lean for TPA. We are at 13 departures daily as of Aug. 01. Just 2 summers ago we were at 23 departures! Hopefully we can call back all our furloughed crew members and maybe add more.

Boy AirTran really does not like expanding its routes in cities where WN has a strong presence. As discussed yesterday on my WN expanding in BUF post, the BUF-FLL market is still unserved. It is a great opportunity for FL to expand there, however they seem to be content with the 3x to ATL out of BUF. They are well liked in BUF, however if they become a little more aggressive and open up a non stop to FLL it would show that they really want to compete with WN and B6 here.

My usual plea to have more SDF service would fit in here with ease. Our service to ATL is DL only and our only LCC is WN. Not too bad here but could always use more I think.
