Does ME Recognise AF Status?

Wed Aug 04, 2004 10:04 pm

A question to all the MEA buffs: does MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME recognise AF frequent flyer status ("Fréquence Plus Rouge") on the MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME-operated codeshare flights? What I mean by recognise is, does the probability of getting an upgrade increase when you are AF FP Rouge? I am just wondering as the check-in at CDG is done by Air France, and my ticket is on an AF flight number, but I'll be on the MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME-operated 332 service.

And after last weekend's experience (on the AF 777 then) on both the CDG-BEY and the BEY-CDG leg I have decided that it was unwise to travel in Y, so much noise and hectic, so an upgrade would be great. Unfortunately I already bought my ticket.

AF do have an FQTV agreement with MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME, so your status should be recognised, especially as it is an AF marketing codeshare flight. MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME is hosted in Alpha-3 so would have recieved your tier status from your booking, and this will in turn be passed to Gaetan for check-in, so you should be OK.

You must be able to get an upgrade, it's part of the codeshare agreement.

if you were to puchase the upgrade with miles, no problem, but if you are going to charm your way to an upgrade i would say forget it.

i flew BEY-CDG-JFK a while back, with BEY-CDG on MEA Middle East Airlines (Lebanon)">ME and CDG-JFK on AF, full business fare. i'm AF frequence plus rouge.

when i got to the arrivals lounge at CDG2C, they wouldn't let me in because i had to arrive on an AF or SkyTeam flight - even with AF FP Rouge.

my experience with AF is that they are a great carrier, but if there is a problem or complication or anything, they will never ever take the passenger's side. you are always wrong and AF is always right.

but the food is great! no airline is perfect.

AF upgrade policy is very simple : you travel for what you pay...

You pay for a Y ticket ? you travel Y
You pay for a J ticket ? you travel J
You pay for a F ticket ? you travel F.

Of course, upgrades at the check-in are always possible in case of overbooking in one class, or to reward a VERY good customer, but DON'T ask for an upgrade at the check-in if you don't have a good reason (and even if you think you've got a good one) : YOU WILL NEVER HAVE IT ! The decision to upgrade a PAX is always taken by the airline and NEVER made on request by the PAX whatever the reason is...

AF022, I am very surprised they didn't let you in the Lounge at CDG2C : If you were coming from BEY, all the 3 daily flights have an AF flight number (AF563, AF569, AF565), even those operated by a MEA plane (AF563 & 569). So unless you were booked on the MEA "quota" (you were then a MEA passenger, not an AF passenger), you should have access to the lounge before your flight to JFK...

On each of the 3 daily flights, half of the seats in J and Y "belong" to AF and half to M.E.A
Only the 12 First Class on AF566/AF565 are sold by AF only.

OK, here's how it went:

I had bought a ticket in "K" class, i.e. not full fare economy, on the AF flight number.

At check-in in CDG, I asked whether I could upgrade against miles or whether they would do upgrades anzway because of a full flight. The lady told me that I could not use miles as I did not have a full fare Y ticket, but after a quick phone call she told me that when doing upgrades they would "think of me". I then went straight to the dpearture gate where I got my boarding pass for seat 1K in Cedar Class. And this was about 1h20 mins before departure, i.e. before they had even closed check-in.

On the return from BEY, I tried the same "trick", i.e. asking whether I could use miles, but I was told that the "AF quota" in C class was already fully booked and that I could only get upgraded within the AF quota. Later on, I saw that there had been upgrades, but I cannot tell whether or not these were people who were originally booked on the AF or the MEA quota.

In any case, I can now confirm that the AF status is to some extent "recognised" even when flying on the MEA metal. I have to add that there is some note in my customer file at Air France, no idea what it is, but in the last 4 weeks I was invited twice to sit in the jump seat at takeoff and landing (CDG-HAM and MUC-CDG) - of course the pilot did not have any idea that there was an airline buff sitting behind him with questions a little more knowledgeable than "where do you start the engines"...  Smile

Thanks for everybody's advice
