Can anyone give me information on Vietnam Airlines?

Who operates the airline?
What nationality are the pilots and mechanics?

Who owns the company? & Who operates the airline?

My best guess for this question is that the government of Vietnam owns and operates the airline because unfortunatley Vietnam is a communist state.

Vietnam Airlines is the national flag carrier for Vietnam, and was established as a state enterprise in April 1989. Vietnam Airlines Corporation was subsequently formed in 1996, after bringing together several service companies. They are transforming themselves into a modern global airline with B777, B767 and A321 aircraft recently joining the fleet.

As for crew, I understand that they are Vietnamese with other asian nation pilots flying for them also.

They are not the best, but you could travel with far worse in that region.

Hi BA84,
we are handling them at FRA and what I can say is they have quite a lot of pilots from other airlines, like LAN, Air Europa/Europe... and others on their 767 and 777 flying. Quite an international group. Furthermore, what we hear is they obviously have a very good service and - having them starting operations into FRA early this year they meanwhile operate 3-times a week and upgraded onto 777 (iso 767) due to increased pax numbers and cargo loads. The local travel industry deals them as a "secret tip" for trips to Far East and Australia due to their good fares and high service-levels... so what I think is they are not bad at all (and they are far behind the times they were only flying Tupolev134´s...). Plus: their a/c are in splendid conditions as what I can see from watching them... hope this helps, just to add some comment.

BA84, which routing do you want to fly?

Vietnam Airline is a nice airline with a modern fleet and nothing to complain about. Of course JAL isn't bad as well.

I had the pleasure to fly VN on following routes:
VTE-HAN on a Tupolev 134 (all Russian planes gone)
HAN-DAD on a 320
HUI-SGN on a ATR72

hope being able to fly them on their 772 and 763 soon.

RRFan, why don't you read up on the subject before commenting

VN are a good asian airline, managed, serviced and crewed by a mixture of vietnamese, asian, aussie, SA and other westerners (like most other asian carriers!)

They have mix of modern (777, A321) and tired (B767, A320) jets plus the ATR's.

My experience (four internal and international flights on the 767's, A320 and A321's) was of an airline learning it's craft and with a great future.

I would recommend flying them if you get a chance and at some point in the future look forward to boarding their proposed non-stop LHR-SGN and HAN services

I fly VN often & will again next week (HKG-SGN). I can't say anything about mechanicals, but as a customer & passenger my experience is worn interiors, mediocre food and less than mediocre service.

I've only experienced one mechanical delay (& it was a long one.)

Most pilots on A320/A321s have been VN while all 767 pilots that I've seen/heard via PA have been Australian. I cannot recall any FA who were not VN.

They are improving but they are far behind their regional competition & I really can't imagine them catching up. Personally as I spend a large part of my time in VN, I hope they do. I'd like to make my Pacific trips on VN Airlines.
