Thu Aug 05, 2004 10:27 am

I will be laying over in BWI Sunday Sep 6 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Anything interesting to do? I will be taking SWA.

It is my understanding that BWI has a fantastic observation area and aviation museum in B Concourse (I believe it is inside the secured area). I have seen pics of the place. It even has a B-737 cockpit on display.

The observation deck can be reached by elevator or stairs off the corridor behind the ticket counters between the B and C councourses. You will have to leave the secured area however.

There is really not much to do at BWI. Its pretty far from anything, even the MARC station is a bit of a bus ride away. Either way, 2 hours is not enough time to be messing with trains and the such. At BWI there is like one restaurant that is pretty dumpy, at least the last time I was there it was. There is fast food but a lot of it is behind security and I have never been to the SWA side of the airport. In between the international terminal and the domestic terminals there is this history of BWI as well as Maryland on the wall with cool photos and other information. Also, there is this observation thing that is inside the terminal with some cool airliner bits and pieces and the such upstairs. Pardon the vagueness of this but that is pretty much what I remember.

Definitely try out the observation deck, you have a good view straight on almost of planes landing on 33L and also 10/28 is almost perpendicular to the observation area. The observation area also provides BWI ATC. There is a pretty cool mini flight museum there. The observation area is located in between concourses C and D, though you will have to go back through security in order to make your connection. It was a nice haven for me when I was stuck there in November.

Thanks for the suggestions. Hopefully the museum and the observation deck will be open after 7:00pm.

I believe the observation deck is open til very late. Just in case it's not, sometimes they close the upper level for special events, there's another one in between the C and D piers. It's at ground level so you don't get the same view, but it's always open. Look for the giant glass crab and you're there.

If you don't want to go through security again try going to the end of C pier. WN built a bridge connecting B and C pier after security so you won't have to come out and go back in again. Anyway, C pier has some better quality food and you should be able to get some nice views from the end of the pier, even if there are planes at the gates.

Hope you enjoy BWI!

The observation gallery closes at 9pm, but that doesn't matter to you since you'll be on your plane at that time. If you don't want to go outside of the security checkpoints, the gate areas on B and C pier offer some nice views of departures and arrivals on 15R/33L and 10/28. If you do want to venture out a little bit, head for the observation gallery.
