Oldest Municipally Operated Airport In US

Thu Aug 05, 2004 11:29 am

Today I was driving by Harry Sham Field (MOD), and noticed they have a big new sign at the intersection of Mitchell and Tenaya.
On the sign it says "Est 1927"
Wouldn't that make it one of, if not the oldest municipally operated airports in the US?
I know of College Park MD, but that began as a private field and was never used for commercial airline service as far as I know....could be wrong, there were some unusual routes in the early days of comav.
I've seen Albany, NY claim title as oldest, but I think they started in 1928.

Bader Field (AIY) in Atlantic City was the first place to be called an "airport", in 1919.

It no longer has commercial air service, with commercial traffic having long ago moved to Atlantic City International (ACY).
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

"Pearson Field, Vancouver, USA is the oldest continually operating airfield in the United States and dates from the landing in 1905 of a dirigible"

http://www.pearsonairmuseum.org/shistory.htm

Don't know if that qualifies as "Municipally Operated" but it's still impressive!

I went to Maryland, FEAR the TURTLE, and I know that the airport there does have a sign proclaiming it the oldest continually used airport in the US or was it world?, but who knows, there are so many different types of records.

I did a search on google, and it seems every airport has some or another "First" claim....I was hoping some of the authorities on this forum had some insight...

Albany, NY makes a claim as "establishing the first municipal landing site for airplanes".

http://www.albanyairport.com/3/welcome/history.html

It doesn't give a date but I believe that the landing strip was established in 1906. According to the article, the airfield relocated to its current spot in the 1920s.

Stinson Municipal in San Antonio Tx is AFAIK the second oldest municipal airport in the US... correct me if I'm wrong.

MDW is one of the oldest in the nation. They started as a small aviation concern on October 1, 1922 and became Chicago Municipal Airport on May 8, 1926. In 1949, Chicago Municipal was renamed "Midway".
