What's Going On With USAirways?

Thu Aug 05, 2004 11:42 am

My brother US on them Monday and Tuesday, experienced a severe delay when he was supposed to return from DAY through PIT on Monday night, was scheduled through PHL into PVD on Monday night, that flight was cancelled, then was scheduled again into PVD through PHL, that flight was significantly delayed, and he ended up coming into BOS through CLT. I also noticed at BOS the other day that a noticeable amount of US flights were significantly delayed or cancelled. The story about the BOS-DCA shuttle being diverted to ALB also made me frown. He told me that in PIT and in CLT it seemed that many flights were just randomly cancelled, now I know obviously that there is a specific reason for each cancellation, but it seemed strange. The reason his flight from DAY-PIT that he was supposed to take on Monday night turning around to BOS was delayed for 2 hours because US had to find another pilot to fly because the original pilot had timed out already that day, is that not awful scheduling and planning in your opinion? His flight going into PIT from BOS was scheduled to be an A321 yet was switched to an A319 because the plane the night before was stuck in PIT due to mechanical failures also. I'm not trying to picky but on an airline like DL, this just does not happen. Is this frequent with US?

I think it was on Monday that US had a central computer failiure that caused a lot of delays, AA had a similar problem on Sunday. Also for Tuesday it may have been weather playing into it, there's some heavy weather moving in here in the northeast that may have plauged flights out towards Ohio and the midwest yesterday. Also there's a thread about the Shuttle flight being diverted, our president's daughters were in Albany and needed a ride to DC so US diverted over and picked them up. Just in all fairness, anything can happen with any airline in terms of delays, it's just how the airline handles it. Hope this helps!

Delays and cancellations happen on any airline. DL is not "immune" to anything.

Weather has played a large role in many of the delays and cancellations across the East Coast, and bad weather in one city can have a ripple effect across an airline's entire network. Bad weather in PHL can cause problems in CLT, PIT, BOS, DCA, MCO, etc. Also, ATC congestion in PHL, especially during bad weather, puts a strain on the entire US network.

The DAY-PIT cancellation was probably due to a crew scheduling problem: US Airways Express carrier PSA Airlines is in the process of tripling in size with new CRJ deliveries, and they're experiencing growing pains in terms of crew scheduling problems. Delays and cancellations for PSA flights have become commonplace in recent weeks and hopefully PSA can get the problems under control.

Uswyjer-US was also affected by AA's computer outage. Keep in mind that both US and AA use SABRE, which shut down Sunday morning, causing havoc with both airlines.

Just a question though, about the PSA problems, how come US Airways couldn't simply use furloughed mainline pilots in the meantime under "jets for jobs"?

There are alot of US mainline guys who don't want to fly the CRJ due to the pay and other things. I know that MidAtlantic is now training Ex-Allegheney and Piedmont guys to fly the 170 due to the lack of Furloughed mainline guys wanting to fly for them.

This is probably because the "jets for jobs" pilots are already under contract with another carrier or because "jets for jobs" is such a raw deal. US Airways and ALPA are not treating their furloughed pilots very fairly and their have already been two suicides by US furloughed pilots.

I don't know much about it, I just know that they were overwhelmed by loosing everything and had not prepared for such thing. My heart goes out to their family though.

"I'm not trying to picky but on an airline like DL, this just does not happen."

That's a completely ignorant statement.

As for the delays on the east coast... perhaps the bloody hurricane had something to do with it?

Well we could say that the hurricane affected it but he flew into CLT just fine which is in the general vicinity of the hurricane's location, and you know, it didn't seem to affect his flight whatsoever there pal!

SHUPirate1- Thanks for the correction, didn't know they were both caused by the same failiure in SABRE, thought they were separate instances.

The weather issue, has more to do with the low pressure system that dumped a lot of rain here on the northeast this morning, it would have been over the central states earlier this week.

Totally agree with InnocuousFox, completely ignorant statement- do some more research and you'll find every airline has it's fair share of problems.  Insane

My understanding is that PSA has had a slew of cancellations over the last month or so due to lack of crews. Considering that virtually all of their service to/from DAY is operated by PSA (aside from a daily Mesa RJ), it's not surprising that DeltaBOS's brother would have been impacted by delays or cancellations. PSA is growing by leaps and bounds, having taken a bunch of CRJ's since the beginning of the year, and I think they're having a lot of trouble getting pilots trained (not to mention having pilots jump ship for higher-paying jobs elsewhere when they can). You should see all the complaints on US Aviation.

My advice is, when considering travel on US Airways, avoid PSA for the next month or two (make sure to check to see who's operating the flight when booking) and see if they can get their issues worked out.

Oh no......don't get me started on PSA here in DAY again!!! I can almost guarantee that leg was cancelled due to lack of flight crew. If he was scheduled on US flight#2263 leaving DAY-PIT I can almost certainly say it was flight crew. USAir's last flights out of DAY are#2263 DAY-PIT and #2357 DAY-PHL and those both are always considerably delayed if not cancelled. If your brother flies on PSA out of DAY in the near future I would recommend he fly in the middle of the day because originators in the morning and last flights out are always hit severely hard with delays and cancellations. Almost every flight into DAY is operated by PSA although there is at least on EMB-145 early in the afternoon.

Furthermore.....from speaking with my USAir friends...they seem to indicate that most of the problems are originating from the "J4J" agreement. Also, I heard things should start to improve in September....but who knows if that is a correct assumption. I really felt for the USAir folks last Sunday night, they had 8 brand new CRJ's sitting on the ramp and three sitting idly in the gate....inside the gate were hundreds of people trying to get out. Many of the folks were over in our gate area(across the hall from USAir) on their cell phones bitching like crazy about their operations. The counter had to contact the police at least once that day as well. In addition, A3330323X has already discussed this topic in the forums already.

Sorry or my rant(and I don't even work for them!!!!!!)
