Miami, Spotting And Shopping

Fri Aug 06, 2004 7:02 am

I will be in the Miami area for a day before a cruise. Can you recommend a hotel for spotting, other spotting places, and any good shops to purchase books and models.

Thanks!

If you want models and some obscure books, but a great show room go to Atlantic Models. They are about two miles northwest of the airport. Easy to get to.

As for spotting it depends which runways they are using, if they are departing to the east, there's a place right off of NW 25 ST, where it ends. If they are departing to the west, go to the 94th Aero Squadron, they are on the south end of the airport on perimeter road and you have Rwy 9/27 in front of you.

Good luck and enjoy. Need more info, email me.

6 Days is perfect. Definitely Hit Coconut Grove, Bayside, South Beach, Viscaya Castle. The Keys is tough to do for a day trip, better for an overnighter. I heard Ft. Lauderdale Beach is back on the map again!

Don't forget the spotting and aviation shopping!

Miami has plenty of Vibe and more. It has a real cosmopolitan feel (hip, European, Latin, American feel, and fun fun fun).

Enjoy!

Yep Miami is sure great! And even better lots of Aviation! If you are there for a week you might want to spend some time at Opa Lacka Airport and see all the GA Coast Gaurd and old birds. Lots of DC-3 and even Antonovs there.
MIA is best durring the afternoon 3:30pm-5:30pm Lots of Euro traffic and AA. And just a few more months of Iberia A319. But if you get there early in the mourning or very late at night you can see the AFA319! or on Sundays I think it is an AF ERJ!
Once at around 11:00pm coming from JFK I saw and AF A340 leaving the gate while and AF 744 was parking in the gate and an AF A319 RON.(Parked)

You sure you werent at CDG? hahaha MIA sure is great! Alot of rare aviation activity...Some days you may even catch the AF ERJ145 in Air Caraibes paint!

Some nice airplanes to look out for that are rare in many airports around the world are the EL AL 772 and 744, Bahamasair 732's, Dash 8300's, Cayman Airways 732's and 733's.

Bienvenidos a Miami! Enjoy your stay....

Hey all,
Ah yes, MIA/FLL, what a paradise. If you really like the beach, go to Las Olas, in Ft Lauderdale beach, which, BTW, in a couple of yrs it will be swarming with luxury hotels. You can also go to the viewing area of FLL right by the I-95/I-595 interchange. The good thing is that you can hear ATC for free... not like at the 94th squadron which, for a college student (moi), is really overpriced and not too good, but has ATC. For books I would recommend you go to Ft Lauderdale Executive Airport, think it's FXE. They have some flight schools and there are a couple of stores to purchase books + all other aviation stuff. It's between commercial blvd. and Cypress Creek west of I-95.

Close to MIA there is the World Transport Press store, which has models and books, and is also the home of Airliners magazine.

Can't remember the name of the street, but if you come from 94th Aero Squadron, head west until you get to Eldorado furniture on the right. Make a right here and the store is on your left in the strip mall.

You may also get away with spotting and photography from the railroad tracks at the end of the street.

Big Orange: Good suggestion. I will definitely hit this one. They most likely will have one of the biggest selections of merchandise.

Thanks.
