I wonder about AA's hubs. They appear to be DFW, ORD, MIA and LAX? ?? Am I missing one somewhere domestically? AA dropped SJC, BNA and RDU as hubs several years back. For the southeastern U.S., you can't really get to the Northeast. For example, from BHM you get three flights to DFW per day. You can't get to anywhere east of the Mississippi conveniently.
I live in BHM so I am looking at this area of the country only, but I'm assuming that the BNA hub wasn't profitable and that was the reason for closing it. I'm a NW frequent flyer just because of the schedules I get. I also do a lot on US. My question would be why wouldn't or wasn't it profitable for AA to operate a southeatern hub?

LAX is not an AA hub, however, it is a gateway city. Mostly transcontinental service is available into and out of LAX with a mix of CDG, LHR, OGG, GDL and HNL service.

RDU and BNA were both dropped because they were pulling too much traffic from DFW and ORD. Plus the aircraft that were flying in and out of BNA and RDU were needed to expand ORD and DFW. These were the main factors in reducing these hubs. Economics didn't hurt either though.....

SJU is a minor hub for AA as well with connecting service to the islands. Official hubs for AA are ORD, DFW, SJU and MIA.

Hey what's up?
There are quite a few people in this forum who are interested in American Airlines. We should have a separate forum exclusively for AA. Just kidding...
I'm also an American Airlines fan, you can tell by my username. I've been travelling with them for over ten years. American is a very good airline, it was at one time voted as the best carrier in the United States. It is a serious company that takes good care of its aircrafts and customers. They've always treated me right, I always had good service on board. I got upgraded many times, flight attendants and agents on the ground are real professionals. When I have a flight delayed or canceled, they always do everything to reschedule me and if they know in advance they call me. They are refurbishing their planes with the new seats which are comfortable and look nice. My only hope is that they will continue to fly to Brussels. Even if they don't codeshare with Sabena on the BRU-JFK flight, it's OK.

American closed its Raleigh and Nashville hubs back in 1994 because those weren't that profitable anymore, they were cutting flights out of these hubs and like one of you said they concentrated on developing Dallas and Chicago. Raleigh was taken over by the new airline Midway which has codeshare agreements with American. San Jose CA was also dropped but now that Reno Air has merged into American, it can be considered as a small hub. Who said they didn't have a SouthEastern hub? Of course they do, it's Miami. San Juan also is a hub in the Caribbean.
Their three main hubs are Dallas, Chicago and Miami. Dallas is the super megahub. Chicago is the gateway to Europe and Miami is the gateway to Latin America. New York (JFK, LGA and EWR all three together) is also considered as a hub, think about it from New York you can fly to many places domestic or international. Los Angeles isn't really a hub but there are quite a few flights, mainly to DFW, ORD and JFK.
