US Airways To Europe

Sun Aug 08, 2004 5:49 am

According to the infamous ITRADE on USAviation...

US Airways has applied for route authority to: Austria, Czech Rep, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovak Rep, and Sweden. This would be either direct service or via code-share.

Here's the docket:

I assume most of these countries are going to be codeshare flights with LH (or other European Star Alliance carriers). I can't see US operating PHL to Iceland, Malta, Romania, etc.

It's great to see additional expansion in Europe however...

Well it seems unlikely they would start non-stop service flights to any of those countries, a connection to Austria, Poland, and Scandanavia considering that USAirways have alliances there and a codeshare would be likely for routes to those locations first.

On another note, with the new US Airways International terminal at PHL, this would be a great time for international expansion.

Seasonal PHL-WAW service would probably be successfull. There is a significant Polish community around Philly area and they all would benefit from it, if pricing is attractive.

There has been some talk around MAN of US and their proposed codeshares. US is also moving to T1 with its Star partners.

BD will be doing codeshares with them, and if flight times are adjusted by LO then there would be a useful one-stop connection year round to WAW from PHL.

Those buses are flying full as it is, this would guarantee US getting the loads year round. It's exactly what they need too. Earnings from outside the domestic USA market.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

If there was money to be made on these routes, CO or DL would have already been all over them. Very unlikely US will want to indulge in such adventurism at this point when they're looking over the edge...

Of that list, Iceland intrigues me.

That is probably a destination they could run with an A319, A320, or B757 from PHL (at 2670 miles).

It strikes me because a continental European connection is not a good fit to go to KEF.

Any more thoughts on KEF? B4REAL

I think (year-round) PHL-WAW service would be very successful. It's also one of the routes (after MIA) that LOT would love to add.

If there was money to be made on these routes, CO or DL would have already been all over them.

...or not. US does very well in Germany, for example, where CO has historically not done well.

Any more thoughts on KEF?

That's true, an A319 could easily fly PHL/BOS-KEF. But I think US most likely just threw Iceland on the list for the heck of it, since it's open skies.
I'm the expert on here on two things, neither of which I care about much anymore.

I think US Air would indeed start codesharing to all the above destinations through - Lufthansa out of Munich/Frankfurt to Central/Eastern Europe plus Malta on one hand, SAS out of Reykjawick via Copenhagen to Norway, Finland, Sweden on the other.

So yes it seems that Boston or Philadelphia to Reykjawick (Iceland) service could be the one and only novelty here.

SK doesn't fly to KEF. It codeshares with FI.

How cool would a PHL-BTS route be?
