I am a LAX
road ... er ... air warrior and FutureFO is right on. NW
is not always cheaper than YX
on the route, it just depends on whether the cheaper fare classes like L, T, and W are available or already sold. For instance, LAX
via the NW
nonstop, leave Sep 30 return Oct 3, went from $247 on Thursday to $280 on Friday to $303 on Saturday. Meanwhile YX
stayed constant at about $280.
This and similar experiences have had me find that YX
's lowest fare is never lower than NW
's, but NW
has a much smaller inventory of those low fares (i.e. they go quickly.) But NW
is also more ruthless than YX
, from what I've seen, in slashing the fares when a flight really isn't selling. I've made some MKE
trips on quite empty NW
planes for about $200/rt, including taxes. YX
never seems to get that low...but, then again, YX
's planes never seem to be that empty.
Side note: I really do like the Saver Service...granted, if given a choice I'd pick a wider leather seat...but if it translates to helping out YX
's bottom line and keeping them in the air, I'm all for it. And while I don't have any problems with NW
's inflight product per se, YX
easily has them beat.
