British Airways. They operate a fleet of 57 B 747-400s.

Heard that Singapore Airlines was ONCE the world's largest B 747-400 operator. Can anyone confirm that?

SQ's fleet of 744's is winding down. Just gave some to AI.
By late in the decade, they will be completely gone from the SQ fleet.

SQ fleet circa 2010: A380, A340-500, B777-200/300/ER/LR, etc.

It's sad, but the truth. Boeing really messed up by not giving one of the largest 747 operators what it needed for the future.

Same thing will happen, albeit on a smaller scale with QF.

Jal is also one of the larger 744 operators, nearly 45 i think and 2 744F to be delivered also.

I think you'll find the 744 in SQ's fleet for quite a while longer. There is still another freighter to be delivered this month and you will see some of the later 744 pax aircraft turned into SF's.

just a side note: China Airlines Cargo has the largest B747-400F fleet with 16 aircrafts. Newest to be delivered sometimes this month and will replace one leased 744F aircraft.

JAL is the largest operator of the 747. They have 111, combined passenger and freighter versions, with the 112th and 113th being assembled at Boeing right now. The 112th being a freighter and the 113th being a passenger.

This information was provided by Boeing when on the factory tour. I saw the two newer ones on the assembly line myself. It was sweet!!

I believe cargo lux has 16 400 f's with another due in th fall korean cargo around 13-14 400 f's I think the 747 is the ultimate freighter, it sure can swallow alot of freight, and everywheer it goes someone whants to snap a photo.

744's--BA has the largest fleet, followed by JAL, I believe UA would be up there too if you count a/c in storage--(I think at one time they had about 46-744's)

Philsquares,
I believe SQ has already announced that they'll be pax-744 free by 2010. So no, we will not see a pax 744 in SQ's fleet for much longer.

When Boeing confirms the B 747 Advanced we will probably see large orders from BA, UA and SQ etc. Also CX

After the same of 8 B 747-400s to CX and KA, SQ will only have 25-27 left right?

SMN is gone BTW.

MauriceB,
I seriously doubt that BA will be shrinking the size of their 744 fleet anytime soon. I know that there has been occasional talk of overcapacity, but LHR is still quite busy and operating larger aircraft on some routes will be a necessity (whether it be the 744 or 380).
I think more evidence that BA is holding on to their 744s for some time is the failed deal with Cathay. Cathay is currently buying PW powered 744s from SQ, but they had been working out an agreement with BA for something like 10-15 RR powered 744s for commonality with their fleet. Anyway, the deal fell through because BA reportedly did not want to sell as many 744s as CX wanted. (I am not completely familiar with the details of the deal, and I welcome other comments) So, I would say that is pretty good evidence that they plan to keep them around for a while. If not, why not sell them when you have an interested buyer?

UA is getting rid of SOME B 747-400s because they do not need the capacity for now. They are not getting rid of the entire fleet. Should they need replacement one day they might look into the B 747 Advanced.

Yes they do not have the $ for now but maybe one day when they get out of chapter 11.

I know that its SOME 744's. And getting out of chapter 11 is looking slim.

Anyway, a little off topic, here is the list according to all 747's in fleet not just 744's. TOP 20

1- Japan Airlines (72)
2- British Airways (57)
3- Korean Air (44)
4- Singapore (43)
5- Air France (37)
6- Lufthansa (cargo) (36)
7- Northwest (36)
8- Qantas (34)
9- United (33)
10- All Nippon Airways (30)
11- China Airlines (30)
12- Cathay Pacific (29)
13- KLM (25)
14- Atlas Air (24)
15- Malaysian (24)
16- Saudi Arabian (24)
17- Thai Airways (20)
18- EVA Airways (19)
19- Air China (17)
20- Air India (16)

U can't see VS ordering any 747As - they have just placed a large order for 346s and have 388s on order, too, so are unlikely to wanna add another type to the fleet.

Well they already operate two different aircraft type: A 340 and B 747. And they took delivery of a few B 747-400s that were originally planned for Alitalia.

They should order some to replace their B 747-400 fleet when Boeing makes one

Actually.. CX only has 19 passenger 747-400s. 5 747-400Fs and 7 747-200Fs.

They're getting 3 ex-SQ 747-400s to be converted to passenger aircrafts while 3 of their oldest passenger aircrafts are converted to freighters.
