Runway Usage At IAD

Tue Aug 10, 2004 2:26 am

When is Runway 12/30 being reopened at IAD? Also, when it is reopened, will the main bulk of flights still be arriving on Runways 1/19? Thanks.

According to the OIS page, Runway 12/30 will reopen on or around 8/30. As far as the runway usage is concerned, I'd imagine they'll go back to using 30 for southbound departures in a north operation and 12 for eastbound arrivals in a south operation.

So, when winds are from the north, IAD can only use Runways 1L and 1R for arrivals?

yes, in north ops, 1L and 1R are used for arrivals, with aircraft arriving from the north and south usually using 1L, and aircraft from the west usually using 1R. 30 is only used for arrivals in strong west/northwest winds, and thats pretty rare. when it happens they fly a 1R approach and make left turn on short final to line up (circle to land rwy 30).

So Runway 30 isn't used much then? I thought most arrivalls either used 1L/R or 19L/R.

30 is used for departures in north ops, and sometime in south ops when winds permit it and departure traffic is significant. 12 is used for arrivals from the west when it can be (south ops and when there isnt a demand to get departures out on 30).

However, there was something very interesting overhead on Tower: one
controller mentioned that Runway 12/30 would reopen sometime between
August 16-19 after concrete resurfacing work had finished, however it
would not be repainted due to budgetary constraints, and would be used
solely for 30 departures!!! If that holds true, that would be a major
change in operations.

huh? was that a joke, perhaps? IF there is no budget to put markings on the runway, then it is not ready for any operations....landings on 12 or departures off of 30. regardless, the airport needs it for both types of ops.
