The airport was originally called Clinton County Air Force Base and is the only airport that I know of that is operated by an aircarrier.
During the Vietnam War, the AC
-47 Spooky Gunship was developed there as an adjunct to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
The airport was also used by the Ohio Air National Guard and the Air Force Reserve with KC
-97's and C-119's.
After it closed as a military base, it was used by Overseas National Airlines as their primary base, next came the Ohio Air Center, and then Airborne Express (now ABX
The original main hangar was a great place to work in cold weather as the floor was heated by warm water lines so you didn't get chilled up from your feet like a lot of cold weather hangars I've been in.
