Photo Of New Jet Blue Terminal At JFK

Wed Aug 11, 2004 1:39 am

The design firm doing the new Jet Blue Terminal posted a picture of it on their web site.

http://www.gensler.com/

As you can see in the picture terminal six will not be affected by the new building. Does any one have any ideas what the plan maybe for six when Jet blue moves out ?

Thanks for the link, but it's been up here for a while. Second, yes I too noticed that T6 would be unaffected by the contruction at 5. Possibly we'll see 6 as a future home of the 190 operations - just a guess though.

....good stuff. A little smaller than I imagined it'd be though.

Yeah someone posted that awhile ago. Thing is, this is a better version of the picture.

Currently, the plan is to move out of T6. However...if we need additional space, you do the math.

so, T5 is, what, a 20 gate concourse? If it is 20, they will need T6 to house operations, probably E190s, in my opinion. I don't know how many gate are in T6, but if they use both, they'd be up to around 40 gates, total?

T6 is a 17 gate concourse if I'm not mistaken so a new 26 gate concourse still seems a little on the small side... But the new terminal does look nice!

It's safe to assume this new terminal will have customs, correct?

T6 is not a 17-gate facility...it is a 12 gate facility with gates that number up to 17 (why they skip numbers is way beyond me)...supposedly (from what I've heard here) is that T5 will not have customs, but jetBlue will eventually put customs into T6...

JB currently operates 11 gates at T6 (1, 2, 4, 7, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 17), not all of which are at full capacity, boarding about 90 flights a day. There's another existing gate (3) that's not used for boarding. If extensions are built out, there's room for maybe another 2 on the north side. So T6 has an ultimate 14-gate capacity, or about 140 flights a day. The new T5 should be good for about 260 flights a day, and JetBlue has first dibs on T6 after the move, so who knows how many flights are eventually possible.

Just by looking at the conceptual photograph (which is nothing to make guesses by), it looks like T5 is connected to T6 by a corridor of some kind. I imagine this is expandable to become a full-fledged gate area, unless it's just too short (I'm not too familiar with the layout of JFK).

If T6 goes to all EMB-190 ops, then they can probably squeeze a few more gates in, anyway... If there are 11 gates at T6 now, then a 26 gate T5 will mean that B6 can more than double its operations at JFK without T6...

David Neeleman said that JetBlue is going to have to grow from 140 flights (the max. T6 can handle) to about 180-190 flights quickly. This is because at around the time they have 140 flights, they will have to move to the new terminal. However, they don't want to go into 26-gate terminal operating 140. They want to go in operating at least 180 flights.

Now that's a problem.

Check out the Q2 press call on jetblue.com for more info.

That's a connector to the Airtrain terminal, across the street from T6. It doesn't go to T6 itself.

Right now there are no firm plans to operate from T6 after the move, with E-190's or anything else. Maybe T6 will be renovated afterwards, even connected to T5, but that's by no means a given at this point.

I agree, but T4 and T6 take up a lot of room on either side of T5.

I find it quite interesting that there is a photo of something that does not exist.  Big grin

Are they [jetBlue] going to use Saarinen's terminal for anything, such as check-in?

Probably some kiosks or something, but the Saarinen terminal itself won't be operated by JetBlue. Someone else will make it into a museum, conference center, restaurant or something. It is no longer suitable for day-to-day airline operations. It is beautiful, but it the structure just doesn't meet modern requirements. The main airline operational area will be in the terminal behind it. The Saarinen terminal will be more like an annex - attached, but separate and superfluous to the operation.

While back about jetBlue will begin new terminal 5 and after TW is used there for some of long time way back 60s. It will made expanding good new restaurant, new baggage handling system into the terminal 5 and will have with laser for their baggage system go through into the right city. It will made beautiful new terminal 5 for in 2008. We can go to New York sometimes around in 2008. I can't wait to see them for myself. I already know went there into the new concourse B in FLL.

This same company designed the new International Terminal being built @ ATL. They are also involved in the design and building of the new cargo facility @ SFO. Looking through their portfolio, they've designed some very impressive buildings with a nice mix of modern and retro touches.

A restaurant at JFK would be nice, as long as there is a good ramp view, but I doubt that anyone would do that.

I know that Independence Air is going to be making regular flights from IAD to JFK starting this summer. The ads on the MTA are talking about 40 flights a day... Any chance that Independence Air might move into T6? Maybe share it with another airline?
