85th Anniversary KLM & Old Airlines?

Thu Aug 12, 2004 12:20 am

What will take place around the party of 85 years KLM on October 7? Who knows the inside information? Should I wait with buying my tickets?

What about other old airlines?

This year Avianca-Colombia will celebrate their 85th year anniversary as well, I think the best way they can celebrate is getting out of Chapter 11 before the end of the year!

KL and AV are the oldest operating airlines. I think mexicana will celebrate its 81th or 82th birthday this year....

Chalks is also 85 years old. The airline began regular service between Miami and Bimini in 1919. Chalks is older then Avianca or KLM.

Ha, thanks people! Nice to hear all those old airlines, but I did never hear about 'Chalks' before! However, they have a nice bird on their homepage!

I think Sabena was some months older also? (They just mention 1919 on their 'website' www.sabena.com/www.sabenabankruptcy.com).

KLM doesn't claim to be the oldest airline, they claim to be the oldest airline still operating under the same brand name. However I guess these days will soon be over...

This coming November will make 75 years that Hawaiian Airlines have been in business. I believe Quantas and Hawaiian are the world safety record holders.

Avianca in Colombia and KLM in the Netherlands were regarded as the oldest operating airlines in the world, being KLM the world oldest and Avianca the America's oldest. Their age difference is not very much but KLM is now part of AF whilst Avianca is struggling to come off Chapter 11 and being handed over to the best bidder.
In this state of affairs is odd saying if either is still the oldest in the world.  Confused

Chalks started in 1919. There are claimed to be the Oldest Airline. But they are all close and old.
JCS: Yea Chalks is great. I fly them all the time to Paridise Island Sea Plane port. Those birds can really fly! Gruman-73

RCS763av I think AV's future is as dull as the one facing KLM so far.

I believe Chalks began in Feb of 1919 and KLM in August 1919 and Avianca in November 1919.

Hope that helps

The first scheduled daily international service was on 25 August 1919 by AT&T, a predecessor of British Airways. The flight was from Hounslow, near Heathrow, to Paris, Le Bourget, at 0910. It is believed that the aircraft returned as the 1230 flight back to London. Later in the year, in October, lunchboxes were introduced for those with strong enough stomachs to resist air sickness.

It occurs to me that Miami to Bimini is international and that service began in Feb 1919 which still keeps Chalks as the oldest.

AF was officially launched on the same day, October 7th, but 14 years later, in 1933.

Whenever talking about history of aviation you shouldn't forget Finland... Our air forces are one of the oldest and Finnair is 4th oldest airline in the world. Quite a long aviation traditions in this small country...

Thanks for the information! Chalks seems to be our 1.

Next question: what about the oldest airports from all (inter)national civil aviation airports that still exist on the same place?

AMS had on May 17, 1920 a first flight to London and AMS had in 1924 it's first trans-continental flight to 'Batavia' (Jakarta).

Chalk's may have that as well simply as their airport is the government cut in Miami. Chalk's has operated out of Watson Island in Miami from 1919 till 9-11-01. The airport is still used for diversions and emergencies. Unfortunately the coast guard restricts Seaplanes and Cruise ships that are in close proximity hence the airport is not nearly as busy as it used to be.

Chalk's also operates out of the same terminal in Bimini that it has used since the turn of the century. The building was rebuilt in the 1970s but it is in the same location.

British Airways is 30 this year! Though its predecessor Imperial Airways was also around in 1919. Its got the lineage, but the likes of KLM, QANTAS, Avianca, etc have kept the same name.

Jat Airways is a 77 year old company. Its predecessor Aeroput was established in 1927. It was later called Yugoslav Airlines (JAT), and now Jat Airways.

Ok, Finnair cannot be the 4th oldest, they were founded in 1923!
