UA Aircraft BOI-SLC In 1963

Fri Aug 13, 2004 1:08 am

I'm trying to find out what type of aircraft was operated by UA between BOI and SLC in 1963. I have emailed UA, but they are unable to tell me. Thanks.

Wow- that's going back a way and probably long before most people using this site were born.

Good luck. Off the top of my head, I'd guess a DC-6. Keep in mind that UA was a very Douglas-oriented airline and probably didn't have too many jets in their fleet at that time.

In '63 United would have had DC-6s, DC-7s, DC-8s, 720s, CV-340s, Caravelles, and Viscounts.

BOI-SLC seems that it would have been more or less a DC-6 city at that time. But I can imagine that some of the trans-con milk runs would see a DC-8 or 720 flying between Salt Lake and Boise.

Thanks-- I appreciate the help. I guessed it would have been a DC-6, probably, but I wanted to know for sure. Boise couldn't handle jets before 1964. I've kept a detailed account of all the aircraft I have been on, but in '63 I was too young to remember flying. Likewise, I'm not sure of what kind of jet we connected to in SLC. I know it was Western to LAX, so I would guess a 720...

My step grandpa worked for UA in BOI around that time. He worked there for three decades. I don't have a timeframe but I do remember him speaking of the DC-7. But in 63 I believe it would have been the DC-6.

UA726 BOI/SLC 0700-0818 DC-7
UA548 BOI/SLC 1205-1328 DC-6
UA602 BOI/SLC 2000-2123 DC-6
UA646 BOI/SLC 2240-0003 DC-6

BTW.
UA726 continued on for DEN, OMA, DSM, ORD, BOS....or on Sat only adding Hartford between ORD and BOS.
The arrival time in BOS was 2205, or with the stop in Hartford 2248.
This flight as well originated in BOI.

In 8/63, four flights a day SLC-BOI:

DC-7 SLC-BOI-PDX-SEA
CV340 SLC-BOI
DC-7 DEN-SLC-BOI-Pendleton-PDX-SEA-YVR
DC-6B DEN-SLC-BOI

I guess Stirling's timetable is earlier?

When the DC-7's were phased out, they only operated between DEN and the West Coast in late 1963, and BOI was one of the last cities to have DC-7 service.

My flight was in Feb. 1963, and according to Stirling's schedule, it would have been a DC-6. It's too bad I was too young to remember it, because I would like to have a memory of a DC-6 or DC-7. Would love to have a chance to fly on one of those again. I do remember the airport in BOI from about 1965 on, though.
