New News Out Of PVD?

Fri Aug 13, 2004 11:48 pm

According to the PVD club on Yahoo:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tfgreenairportwarwickripvd

There is supposedly going to be a big break in TF Green news. As if we haven't had a successful 2004 already, there is talk of additional flights (on MD-80s) but so far no mention of city or airline. FYI, the only airlines operating MD-8X aircraft are DL on select ATL and CVG flights and AA on ORD and DFW routes. Anybody heard anything?

Its not DL it is a LCC. Look for service to three new destinations. Here is a hint. They won't have M80s for long  Smile

Are we possibly talking about Spirit? I think they could fit the bill...

AA to MIA, daily, 1 November 2004. It is not set in stone, but it would make sense.

Starting MIA-PVD had really lost priority lately, but sources say AA has had a change of heart recently.

The NW DC-9 will return to PVD for the 12:00p flight to DTW this winter.

Well scratch that. I wouldn't rule out MIA-PVD on AA, but it looks like it is Spirit if the hints are true. Great news.

If the NK rumor is indeed true, I think PVD would be an extremely BOLD move for them. My feeling however, they'll get squashed by WN and US, because they won't have the resources or frequency to effectively compete....JMO.

Now, if the NK rumour is true, it is stated above that it would be three destinations. I would assume FLL is the gimme pick, as NK has a strong operation there and there is hardly any competition to South Florida from PVD (unless you call a once-weekly Southwest 737 competition). I wouldn't be shocked if MYR was a seasonal/winter route as well. That leaves the third destination. DTW is more or less NK's hub, but they would be going head-to-head with NW here, which could get very interesting...

Sounds like it's Spirit. They're the only LCC I know that is flying MD80's at all and they ARE slated for replacement in the near future.

"DTW is more or less NK's hub, but they would be going head-to-head with NW here, which could get very interesting..." Well, they've been going up against NW for years anyway.

I would HOPE (and expect) that one of Spirit's routes out of PVD would be to DTW. Airfares to Boston are absolutely excruciating here in Detroit and PVD would provide a good low-cost alternative. WN is not a good option right now because you have to fly WEST to MDW to connect to BWI to connect to either MHT or PVD. Either that or drive to Cleveland to get on WN to fly to BWI to connect to PVD or MHT. Neither option is very attractive.

The other PVD route I would expect NK to fly would be to FLL.

DeltAirline is really on the right track. MYR is wrong, but his other two guesses are correct.

Nice job on the NK prediction! I honestly never saw that coming. I sure hope it pans out, especially for FLL's sake. Spirit is widely unknown in New England, and Providence would make a perfect match with them, especially if we get South Florida. That might make it more difficult to get MIA flights, but I'm content with that. Independence is squeezing their way into some current Delta ticket counter space, and they got lucky Gate 20 is unclaimed. But I have no idea where NK would set up and park if they ever came!

Just out of curiousity, what will be Spirit's replacement for MD-80s?

And WHO will/would be handling Spirit at PVD, since there is technically no ticket counter space left to lease?

A319s & A321s (but no A320s) will eventually replace NK's MD-80s.

The lastest that I heard is the DL will handle them. TF Green will be building new ticket counters for them.

That might make it more difficult to get MIA flights,

Not at all, if anything, it makes AA react. This might explain be why MIA-PVD has again surfaced as a likely route for AA to start this week, after earlier rumours ruled it out for a winter 2004 start.

That is some great news for PVD.. I would guess the last route would be TPA.

Nope. WN already does that route. It's another Florida city.

The only one left is Ft Myers... but WHY doesn't anyone want to go against WN? I mean, they can't be that impenetrable...

Should I start my airline in 5 years like I want to do.. I will definitely be taking on some WN routes..

The third destination is Ft. Myers, another market that PVD has no non-stop service to, and no Southwest to deal with.

Airportplan, or should I call you "the czar" as far as all this is concerned. Is there any kind of timeframe you're aware of as to start dates? FLL and RSW would be amazing popular routes from PVD. Can't say I'm mad about Rock-City either. NW does pretty well on those routes all by themselves, even with their pricey fares.

Spirit will probably do well out of PVD: At one point PVD had two nonstops to FLL a day. Now they have only Saturday service which is insufficient for demand. Providence is the largest market from FLL unserved by nonstops and vice versa. Southwest hasn't shown any inclination to operate this route daily year round. Spirit will also have the benefit of a conx market at FLL.

RSW would do well as the only nonstop options are out of BOS right now.

DTW can be profitable just because the yields are high, they could probably do well at PLF 60%. There is also a connecting market (albeit to markets with already a lot of service).

With future terminal expansion plans over at ACY, could a PVD-ACY route be in NK's future should they come to PVD?

Very true. Hell of a treat it would be to go from PVD-SJU/CUN on a cheap 1-stop ticket.

October is the time frame for the new service. Mikeycpvd hit on a major point for NK. PVD can provide more more feed from New England for NK's Caribbean operations at FLL.

It would sure as hell be nice to have Spirit here in PVD, but it would have to wait, we have no ticket counter space and the only gate they could possibly use is maybe 22, which DL uses once a day. Also, maybe US could fork over a gate, they have 6 gates! WN operates more flights than them with 4!

Mmmm forbidden donut.

CO is down to just one main line flight per day from PVD with all the rest of the CLE and EWR using RJ's. There might be a little space indoors and out for them to handle a few movements from another carrier. Otherwise things are tight. Too bad their pre 9/11 IAH is still gone. I can't really see DL handling Spirit. ( if the new carrier is them).
