TPA Closed

Sat Aug 14, 2004 1:36 am

With hurricane Charlie off the coast, they closed down TPA at Noon. Looks as if AA1050 TPA-LGA was the last flight out. It doens't look like the storm is going to hit right over Tampa Bay now, it's probably going to hit south of there around Venice! Boy it's going to be a mess.....

Did any airlines leave their planes at TPA to 'ride out' the hurricane?

The news I saw this morning seemed to indicate the whole city of Tampa is closed! I'm also sure RSW, Sarasota & Clearwater airports are closed for the day. Even MCO is closing for a few hours later this PM.
None shall pass!!!!

Since the center of the storm is headed for Orlando, looks like a lot of flights have xld already. Flight explorer is only showing about 20 flights on the way, the last one arrivng just before 5pm so far. I can't imagine too many flights arriving after that.

Did any airlines leave their planes at TPA to 'ride out' the hurricane?

The airlines have been through this routine any number of times. They'll set a cutoff time for the last departures, and everything'll clear out. Having been at MSY for 17 years, and having ridden out quite a few hurricanes at the airport, none of which have approached the 145-mph, Cat 4 storm that is bearing down on the TPA/SRQ/RSW region, the only commercial aircraft I've seen here was a PanAm 737 that declared a in-flight emergency and had to land (that back in the late 80's).

That said, I can't say definitely if anything stayed at TPA, but I sincerely doubt it.

Yep, seems that all NW flights from MSP to MCO and TPA are cancelled. All the TPA flights were cancelled right away, it seems the 7:30 am flight to MCO was able to leave MSP. Other than that, anything after 12 noon to MCO was cancelled.

There's a few DL ERJs sitting on the east pad at CMH, which likely would have been running CMH-Florida routes.

This is interesting. What about ground equipment, is it stowed away somewhere?

Having survived two hurricanes in Louisiana in 1996, I know for certain I wouldn't want to be in the air during one. TPA was correct in taking the action they did to close. Even a low-strength hurricane can be dangerous, but if Charlie is a Cat 4 storm, no one with a sane mind should attempt to fly through it.

Nope. Aircraft are flown off (either with pax on regular flights/extra sections, or ferried empty) to some place out of the path of the storm.

Back when Andrew hit south Florida in the 1990s, Homestead AFB was particularly hard hit. There was this one F-16 that was unflyable for some reason, and it stayed behind while the others were all flown off to other bases. There's a picture available on the internet of what the F-16 looked like after Andrew left town, and it was pretty much beat to crud. Now, obviously, an airliner is bigger than an F-16, but given the winds commonly fould in your average TS/Hurricanes, I don't think an airliner in those same conditions would have escaped major damage and/or outright destruction.

I seem to remember Andrew arriving in MIA shortly after Braniff III went under and seeing two of their planes sitting out there, well pictures at least, the landing gear collapsed on one and it seemed to bump the other as memory serves me.

It's funny that 120mph winds may cause damage to an airplane but they fly at over 500mph. I was just playing Flihgt Sim with 120mph winds, all you have to do is pull back on to yoke and your off. Try it.

Cute Mu2... Cute

Bear in mind that 120mph wind on the ground is not likely to hit you square on the nose but more likely on the beam (side for you landlubbers). Also you don't find too many tree limbs, roofing tiles, etc at 35,000 feet.

If I owned a $50 million plus aircraft, I sure as hell wouldn't take my chances leaving it in the path of any storm, especially a CAT4.

This SOB came out of nowhere, I never expected to see it get this big.

I was searching for the VS flights into and out of MCO. I found them on http://www.flightview.com

The early flight made it in from LGW and made an early departure back to LGW. The 2 later flights were diverted. One went to MIA and the other to BOS. The MAN to MCO flight also made it in and is on her way back to MAN

WN had cancelled most of it's flights, I went to MCO's website, and most of the flights are cancelled by all airlines.

The storm went in further south than expected, saving TPA from the worst, but is now headed directly for MCO and the Daytona Beach. Winds still @ about 115mph.

Funny thing is, here in PBI we expected to at least get wet, but we had barely a drop of rain. Just cloudy and breezy all day. I feel bad for those people on the west coast, especially Ft Myers, Sanibel Island area. They got nailed. I have reports that agencies from our area are already mobilizing to send help over there.

Those of us who live on the east coast of Florida should pay attention to see if there is any help we can provide. I remember when Andrew came through in the early 1990s (can't remember exact year) I went w/ a group of people from my high school to the local fairgrounds which was set up as a distribution center for all the supplies that were coming in from around the country.

West Palm dodged a bullet again. I just wonder when our time will come.

Praying for all of those in the path of this storm

As I write this, Charlie is zeroing in on MCO. F9 cancelled everything to Florida that was supposed to leave today at 10:15 am MDT (FLL, RSW, MCO and TPA), and also cancelled F9 671 (MCO-DEN) and F9 350 (TPA-DEN). I believe these were the back end of RON flights, so these cancellations aren't unexpected. They do expect to have everything up and running as normal tomorrow.

By the way, TPA is scheduled to open at 6:00 am 8/14/04.

I propose a stupid question.

This time of year, most airlines run near or at full capacity to FLorida, especially into MCO.

When you have cancellations on such a grand scale, such as on Friday with Hurricane Charley, how are the airlines able to get those people that were cancelled to their destination, when the following days flights are also near or at full capacity?

The airways this time of year are so massively congested, I can't imagine them adding a significant amount of flights to accomodate everyone, besides, the airlines probably dont have to many extra aircraft for this scenario.

Hope you guys in Tpa and surrounding areas ride this out ok. I work in Cork airport where if we get a wind over 55/60 mph we think we have problems. I can't think what we would do if we were hit by a Cat 4 storm. Good luck to all

I was just checking out the flight information for certain airlines into MCO from NYC. For example Song out of LGA and Delta out of ATL, most if not all flights are cancelled for this morning through early afternoon. What a mess, how do the airlines ever catch up?

VS have cancelled two of the three flights to MCO from LGW today, the one that wasn't cancelled (AFAIK) was the early one, so perhaps they're hoping to get it away before. Also the BA one went (once again AFAIK). The British Airways flight to Tampa departed at 13:30 rather than 11:20, was that so that when it got there, the hurricane would have mainly passed it by then, or would that have been something else?

All the Sanford flights from the UK seem to be OK (Apart from Air Atlanta Europe from Gatwick, but whats new?  Big grin)
