Any Plans For New Major Airports?

Sat Aug 14, 2004 2:07 am

Does any body know about plans or projects for new large main airports anywhere around the world?

Also, proposals for new airports...

For instance: Mexico City needs a second large airport and the two projects presented a couple of years ago were turned down. Now the plan is to up grade smaller airports near by to handle cargo and domestic flights.

What about Sydney, San Francisco, Madrid, Sao Paulo, Cairo, etc?

Good news from Berlin!

Read in USA Today that the German government has given final approval for public financing of the new Berlin-Brandenburg airport, to be located just south of Berlin, using part of the current SXF.

Flughafen (airport) BBI is expected to open in 2010.

In the Los Angeles area, not a whole lot can be done to expand LAX but I've seen much in print like the LA Times sugesting they would like to see more domestic utlization of ONT, BUR, and SNA while LAX shifts more emphasis to international flights. In that proposal was also the idea of linking up those airports with a high-speed rail connection.

Also discussed was upgrading airports in San Bernardino and Lancaster to accommodate commercial aviaion as well and presumably putting them on the high-speed rail link. (High-speed rail links are comonplace in Europe and Asia.)

As far as whole NEW major airports, nothing has been planned or developed since Denver. DTW opened up the new McNamara terminal and expanded the runways in 2002. Other than that, not much is on the books.

If I were to place a bet on the US, my money might be on San Diego. Lindbergh has been at capacity for eons.

The Central Japan International Airport is set to open in February 2005 serving the Nagoya Area and central Japan. It will replace Komaki Airport which currently serves Nagoya which will close to airline traffic.

Under construction right now:

Central Japan International Airport (Centrair) - will replace Nagoya Komaki airport for domestic and international flights

Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport - will take over international and some domestic flights from Don Muang Airport; details not hammered out yet

Doha (Qatar) Airport - technically it's an expansion of the existing airport, but it basically amounts to building a whole new airport on reclaimed land adjacent to the current facility.

Tehran Imam Khomeini Airport - it's finished but, to the best of my knowledge, isn't receiving flights yet. It will take over international flying from Mehrabad Airport in central Tehran.

Planned:

Berlin Brandenburg International - will replace Tegel and Tempelhof with a new facility on the site of the former Schoenefeld Airport.

There are also some facilities that have been almost completely rebuilt - such as Detroit and Tokyo Haneda. Madrid is constructing basically an entirely new airport on the site of the current Barajas Airport.

Actually, much can be done to LAX. The NIMBYs however are another story.

Link to the LAX Master Plan:
http://www.laxmasterplan.org/

There's one coalition out there, I forget what they call themselves, that wants to redistribute LAX air traffic evenly to the other regional airports, SNA, LGB, PMD, BUR, ONT... (???How they gonna do that???)
This coalition is made up of 86 cities, counties, and government and education agencies.

Miami, Detroit, Orlando, Denver, Cleveland and Houston have all added runways in the past two years.

Atlanta, Cincinnati, Seattle, Minneapolis/St. Paul and St. Louis have new runways under construction.

Chicago O'Hare, Los Angeles, Charlotte, Pittsburgh (although I doubt they'll need it), Boston, New Orleans and Fort Lauderdale have all proposed new runways, although no dirt is moving yet.

India: Bangalore is building a new airport.

Japan: the following airports are planned:
- Shin-Minami-Daito (1500m)
- New-Tanegashima (2000m)
- New-Mombetsu (2000m), somewhere in the Nord-East of Hokkaido
- Amakusa (1000m)
- Saga (2000m), between Nagasaki and Fukuoka on Kyushu-Island
- Kobe (2500m), west of Osaka on reclaimed lland in the Osaka-Bay
- Shizuoka (2500m), between Tokyo and Nagoyo on top of aShinkansen Railway tunnel with the possible first direct shinkansen-airport station
- Odate-Noshiro (2000m)
- New-Kita-Kyusyu (2500m), east of Fukuoka on reclaimed land with an 24hour permission.

Dont ask me where all these airports are in Japan, but that the info given by the Japanese aviation ministery. Maybe some of them - I think Saga - are already open. There was also an good article in the AirlinersWorld magazin 1 1/2 year ago about planned airport projects in Japan.

RDU has a 3rd runway on the books also... tentative construction after completion of the renovated Terminal C and simultaneous with the renovation of Terminal A. FAA approval already granted and found to be necessary as of 2002.
