Olympics Athletes Flew Which Airlines To ATH?

Sat Aug 14, 2004 4:00 am

Hi everyone --

Does anyone know which airlines flew Olympics atheletes to the Olympics Games in Athens? Do they use special charter or regular flights?

What does your country do?

For China, the Chinese team flew AIR CHINA, and it is a special nonstop charter flight from Beijing.

I am very curious -- thanks!

Appears that the Australian team flew QANTAS whereas the Hong Kong team went with THAI...

American athletes could take any commercial carrier of their choosing.

I know CO had some of them in a VIP movement out of EWR via KL in AMS and into Athens.

Does anyone know if any US carriers pay for rights to be the official US airline of the Olympics? What I mean is Delta has been the airline of the Olympics in 1996 and in 2002 when they were in the US, and both in Delta hubs I should add. Does any US carrier vie for these rights when the games are in another country?

That being said, I cannot wait for the Olympics to start...well...I guess that technically they have with women's soccer, but you know what I mean!

P.S. Let's also hope that neither Boeing or Airbus ever tries to lay claim to being the manufacturer who carried more athletes or fans to the Olympics!  Smile

Also, a little over a month ago, I saw the US women's softball team in ORD going to Wassau/Stevens Point, WI. However, they may have been flying UA because they operated planes large enough for the entire team (CRJs). I know that YX* operates smaller ones, but maybe not NW.

Also, in person Jenny Finch, Team USA's second starting pitcher, is quite attractive!

I have a DTW buddy of mine that worked a charter last week over to ATH...have not talked to him since he returned, when I do I will find out who and what were on board....Im guessing its just a charter or non-athletes like it was the 2 for SYD.

The South Africa team was taken there on a special charter flight (done by SAA on an SAA plane), (remember we had NDizani to take the Olympic team to Atlanta in 1996) to Athens on a Airbus 340-200. They will go home on a charter flight again done by SAA.

Fresh from the Delta intra-net news network:

Delta transports athletes to the Olympics
12:25 p.m. 08/13/04

Delta transported many of the athletes that will be competing in the 2004 Summer Olympic Games, beginning today in Athens. Delta designated 12 charter flights for NBC and provided a team of Airport Customer Service employees from the region to support the passengers for the duration of the games. Team members speak a variety of languages to facilitate communications among the athletes from different parts of the world.

Delta also expanded service to passengers this summer between Greece and the U.S. with the addition of a second flight to Athens from New York-JFK. The additional service, added for customers attending the Games, brings valuable tourism opportunities to the Greek economy and offers more options for customers from Greece to take their summer vacation in the U.S.

I believe the Australia team flew Qantas to Europe, but not to Athens. Most of the team did not go directly to Athens, however went to one of many training camps thought out Europe. Qantas will however fly several charter flights that will take the entire team from Athens back to Australia. Regards

Czech team flew regular CSA service to ATH. I think this will be the most common answer you will get since national carriers usually are official carrier of their national olympic team.

I am in Athens right now for the Olympic Games. Let me tell you that opening ceremony yesterday was awesome. Anyway all I know is that the teams weren't tied down to anything specific. As it was already mentioned USA athletes came on whatever flight they wished. For instance I came on Alitalia and the plane had a couple of USA atheletes on it. So it was their choice.

From the best of my understanding, only one carrier could be chosen as the official partner carrier for an Olympic Games, and history tells that it was often the flagship carrier of the nation that hosts the once-every-four-years event who had been chosen at the end.

Best Regards.

Interestingly the official carrier for Team GB (Great Britain) is actually Cyprus Airways this time around !
Much of the squad are training and staying in Cyprus rather than Athens.
May have some security reasons what with the huge British Military presence at Dehkelia and Akrotiri.
(British Sovereign Bases where UK law applies !)
They will commute to Athens with Cyprus Airways as necessary.

Arkia is the Israeli official carrier to the Olympics this year. They flew B757-300 in a special flight from Tel Aviv to Athens (1 hour 40 min).

I was wondering how the Team of Ghana and Cameroon flew in yesterday. Both equipes are not very large, yet I remeber that Cameroon airlines had a special flight for the soccer championships 2002 in Korea.
No pics uploaded yet, but how much of a geek do you have to be, to rather go spotting, than being a part of the olympic games?!

I believe Indian contingent went on scheduled Gulf Air flights. (India:BOM/BLR/DEL) - BAH - ATH. Hockey team probably arrived directly from training camp in Arizona/US.

Hey Solnabo,
It is called a joke! Given how everything gets sponsored today or people are always trying to lay claim to being the leader in this, I just thought that it would be an amusing joke!

The most interesting flight has got to be the Iraqi team -- flying a RAAF C-130 from Baghdad to Jordan for the first part of their flight!!!
