Midwest Fleet Question

Sat Aug 14, 2004 6:32 am

A few years back I remember Midwest talking about getting airbuses in their fleet. Was it going to be 318's or 319's. I really wish YX would have got the 318 but I guess the 717's are good for now. Does anyone see Midwest ordering a different aircraft in the future (I mean 15-20 years from now)? Maybe as a replacement for their MD-80's?  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

They were deciding between the A318 or the B717. They chose the B717.

The 717, and the M80's they have are well suited for their route structure and there is no need to get a larger a/c.

Like the previous 2 posters said... no need for larger aircraft. The part of the choice that drove them to a 717 is that it is a little more similar to the MD80/DC9 line than a 318. I also like that they only have a Boeing line of mainline A/C and that makes their maintnance easier since the bodies are similar. Mind you, the engines are definately different.

Wasn't a big factor in the decision that they could "economically" keep the 2x2 seating across the 717 versus having to go 2x3 in the 318? That's from distant memory of reading the news article when the order was placed...

I don't think they ever seriously considered the A318. I remember back in 99/00 they had posters of 717's(in Midwest colors) hanging in on the walls in the airport offices.

If anything I would expect a 737NG in the fleet (ala Citrus), since Saver Service is 3x2 they could easily dilute the product more by going with 737NG 3x3 seating. YX's fleet ranges from Early-80's to Early-90's MadDogs, I would expect some sort of decision to be made, within the next 5 years.

There are no more scheduled ops on the DC9. At my last recollection they had 1 DC9 left but this too may be gone now as more 717s have been delivered.

The only reason I can think of they would want something other than the MD80/717 is for charter ops...YX does plenty of sports charters for baseball, basketball, and hockey teams and a longer range a/c would open them up to more business, methinks. But I can see why the cost benefits of mx and fleet commonality might rule against that decision.
