Why So Many Accidents?

There seem to be a lot of a/c accidents lately. The following are all within the past two or so months.

UA's current list of issues;
  • 777 and Air Jamaica meet at LHR

  • 777 vs. Jetbridge at LAX, the jetbridge won

  • 777 vs. Philippine Airline's 744

  • 744 evac. at BKK

  • 744 returns to SYD after cockpit intruder.

  • UAX CRJ has main rudder clipped by NW A319


  • BA's current list of issues;
  • A320 Diverts to BUD

  • A321 Diverts to BUD

  • 777 Returns Under Full Emergency At LHR Due to Fuel Hatch Being Left Open

  • 777 Returns to IAH also Under Full Emergency Due to Engine Fire


  • IB's Current List of Issues;
  • A340-600 R/T for Unknown Reasons

  • A340-300 Returns to JFK Due to Engine Problems

  • A340-300 Has Issues in Lav and Returns to Santiago


  • MH's Current List of Issues;
  • 777 tail strike at ZRH


  • Air Luxor's Issues;
  • Two Rejected takoff's involving the same TriStar.


  • SATA International Airlines Issues;
  • HARD lading involving A320


  • Air Europa's Issues;
  • Major Bird strike during decent into destination causing substatial damage


  • Aero California's Issues;
  • DC-9 R/T at Mexico City due to poor weather


  • Air Jamaica's Issues;
  • A340 Cliped by UA777


  • Philippine Airline's Issues;
  • 744 Clipped at LAX by UA777

  • A330 suffers hydraulic issues at SIN

  • MD-11 suffers butt plant due to loading/unloading issues

  • 747-400ERF Missing Winglet for Unknown Reason

  • 777 Suffers Bird strike on final


  • BWIA's Issues;
  • 737-800 hit by "honey truck" causing over a million in damages


  • NW's Issues;
  • A319 Strikes United Express a/c


  • LAB's Issues;
  • 767 is found to have massive "crease" in body on final


  • I have been viewing A.net for some time now and I know this is not a common occurrence. What's going on?!?!?!

    Yesterday when flying home from our roadtrip with our friend (Trip Report coming soon) on 3J6348 YVR-YXY we flew through a flock of birds and although there seemed to be no damage we did apparently knock a few to the ground so 15-20 minutes into the flight we had to turn around and return to YVR where the emergency services gave it a quick check after departing the runway to confirm its ok to taxi to the gate to let us off while maintenance checks it out for 30 minutes before we boared the aircraft again and left.



    Oh well, shit happens

    yawn...time to go back to sleep... Insane

    There is a lot of 777's in those figures why is that, my dads friend is a 777 pilot and says they are the easiest aircraft to fly?

    Well, at least no major airline disasters like huge fatal crashes. We have done well there.

    Most of these appear to be inceidents, not accidents. A whole lot of them are, while not routine, fairly common. Bird strikes, tail strikes, RTRs for mechanicals, ATBs for mechanicals.

    I think what you're seeing is a much higher awareness from the sensationalism hungry media, hoping to catch the breaking story on something. they just report something the instant it happens and then follow-up to see if it was worth the time.

    As Air2gxs says, incidents, not accidents. This is a pretty routine list. I'll show you how routine.

    The NTSB only investigates serious incidents or accidents, and generally only within the United States (unless asked by a foreign government, or unless a crash raises eyebrows about the design of a US-made airplane). I just went to the NTSB's web site and picked a random month from recent years to see how many incidents they investigated. Here is a link to the random month I picked:

    Most of those are GA flights, but not all, and that's mainly just the United States.

    Now, if you want an even bigger list including more airliners, go to the FAA's site for less serious incident investigations: https://www.nasdac.faa.gov/pls/nasdac/NASDAC.wwa_app_module.new_instance?p_moduleid=2165301351

    Put in that same month as the NTSB's site and you'll probably be shocked at the size of the list and the number of airliners on it. But this is the way it is, every single month of every year.

    It's no different then any other time. Just with todays media the word gets around. Ramp strikes, Ramp rash happens all the time. Its really very common.

    Ooh....What did I find in the hangar when I got to work this morning...? A EMB-145 that someone drove a jetway into..!!

    Sounds like an ordinary day in the world of aviation. I don't think any of the incidents you mentioned qualify to be called an accident.

    There is a difference between an accident and an incident. Most of these are the latter. And they are not sorted by date, if they were and then compared to the number of worldwide flights for those respective dates, then I do not think the overall picture would look that bad.
