Flights To South America.

Sat Aug 14, 2004 10:10 pm

Hi everyone... I was just wondering...has anyone been on red eye flights from Miami or wherever to South America...I just miss thsoe flights...I remember going to Miami at like 9pm...were its almost dead...and walking through the terminal and seeing flights going to rio, sao paulo, lima, buenos, aires, etc...then getting on the plane...every light otuside on the tarmac is yellowish color...then they handed out little toothpaste packets and tooth brushes and then we rollled down the runway behind a vasp or varig md 11 or 767....and we take off...climb climb..and it starts getting bumpy..then i more bumpy..then dinenr starts..u eat...then u watch the movie..u fall asleep...then u wake up in the middle of the flight and all u se is people snoozing around...and theres nothign out there but some clouds....all the way below and some tiny island...and the moon and that BIG YELLOW LIGHT ( the anti collision light) ive always wanted tog et a picture of it but tis almsot impossible...and then id fall back asleep...wake up and we are over the never ending northern chilean fog...eating breakfast...then we start decending...and then in between clouds and fog bump bump we land and bundle up cuz we r back in chile...anyways...do u have any anti colission light stories? sorry im bored...just curious  Smile

CRJBOY,

I believe there are still a couple of night departures to S. America from MIA. Especially south cone countries like Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile... Other countries are just too close to MIA to last the whole night.

I was on a "red-eye" Varig 747-300 Combi Miami-Sao Paulo back in 1995. It was more or less like you described. I woke up over the Mato Grosso, seeing sunrise over the vast Brazilian plains, listening to the soft music of Gilberto Gil. It was very special. A long way to go still you could already see the city of Sao Paulo as we approached from the west and the airport Guarulhos is in the east, what an enormous city, incredible, looking from above it looks even scary.

CRJboy...I have been on numerous flights to SCL and EZE from both MIA and DFW over the years. My first trip to the cone of South America was in Dec.1990, not too long after AA took over the routes from bankrupt EA.

No collision light stores, but I do remember seeing the fires of the rain forest over Amazon basin of Brasil on one trip.

Generally my trips have taken place in either December or January..thus leaving the Noth American Winter for the warmth of Latin America summer!

You have several of these flights from MIA. JJ8091 (TAM A330) to GRU leaves at 9PM and you also have a couple of AA flights as well. I normally go on the JJ8091 once every 4 to 6 weeks and I love that flight. When I return on the JJ8090 I always start out with a nice dinner at "The Collection" which is an excellent restaurant on the upper floor at GRU. Try their Filet Mignon and a couple of Caipirihna's and you will sleep like a baby until breakfast is served an hour before landing in Miami.

I've flown both MIA-SCL and SCL-MIA by night.

I have to confess for a 9 hour flights, lack of IFE has a big impact. I remember AA didn't even give flight status information, so you were wondering what was that light below.

I specially remember descending to MIA at 5 AM and see all the keys in light... beautiful!

Also remember see fire in Cuba, etc. Great flights indeed!

BTW: All non stop service USA-Chile is red eye. LAN has about 3 daily departures to MIA, but via LIM, BOG, UIO or CSS...the good thing in living at the end of the world is that you get lot of long hauls and wide bodies!

I'm surprised you found it empty at MIA, because between 8PM and midnight is one of the busiest times at MIA. You have a few domestic departures and some European flights leaving (BA's 2nd and 3rd frequencies; AF's second frequency; AY and MP), but there are a plethora of flights to Latin America leaving at the time. AA operates two redeyes each to Sao Paulo, Rio, and Buenos Aires, plus one redeye each to Lima, Montevideo, and Santiago de Chile. TAM has a redeye to Sao Paulo, and so does Varig. LanPeru has a redeye to Lima, and LanChile has two redeyes to Santiago de Chile. Aerolineas Argentinas has a redeye to Buenos Aires, and LAB has redeyes to Manaus, Cochabamba, and Santa Cruz (destination depends on the day of the week).

CO MIA, Houston

I think you mean "CO IAH. EWR"

Speaking of South America flights, I wonder when CO will have EWR-SCL again!

JJMNGR
The only negative with the dayflight is that I always have to stay overnight in Sao Paulo due to the late arrival and no connection to UDI before the early morning flight from CGH however it's very convenient to stay at the IBIS across the street from CGH, You are also right that if the weather cooperates you will have a nice view of the Amazon area.

I love flying MIA-EZE, especially when I have been away from Argentina so long, because I get to hear and abundance of Argentine Spanish sounds, which arent very common in the Midwest or at IAD or DFW when you fly to EZE. The accents get me excited for my journey.

I am trying DFW-EZE EZE-DFW (AA996 and 997) Sep 2. This is the first time I have tried this flight(I have done it DFW-MIA-EZE a lot). Anyone else been on this flight? Any idea of the flight path(I have great circle mapped it but that is usually off a little). I am very familiar with the AA763 amenities so I just looking for other impressions. I have flown every other route from the USA to EZE so I am excited to do the last one remaining(At least until UA855 ORD-EZE opens..I have done ATL-EZE already when it was active)

Any info would be great.

Thanks,

Brad

I just flew MEX-GRU and GRU-LAX on RG and both flights were red eyes. Strangely, only one movie was shown on both legs. That left a lot of time to look out the window and look at darkness that is the Amazon Forest. Miles and miles of open space........I would actually prefer PTVs but that will have to wait until I fly CO again.

My family and I were schedule on the alst flight out MIA to CCS (around 9 or so) althoguh we were at the airport since noon trying to get on an earlier flight we had to settle for the last flight. It was a lot of fun departing at night, since I had a windows seat the view was great when the aircraft turned onto the runway.

@ Fokker50 :LA MIA

Does LA have rights to sell BOG-MIA? I thought they didn't

@ Klwright69 :Speaking of South America flights, I wonder when CO will have EWR-SCL again!

Unfortunatelly, I don't think LAN is going to allow them again!

Yeah I flew... SCL-LIM-BOG-MIA. It was a loooooong flight, but it was cool flying Lan Chile... I heard that when they had started the new image...the south of chile meant first class, the central zone of chile was business and the north of chile, the desserts was coach class...or something like that...but anyways..thats what i remember....i flew them once from MIA to SCL non stop....when did LAN stop MIA-MCO? they flew it when i lived in chile back in 98.

CRJBoy:

Well, I've flown SCL-HAV-CUN-MIA, but LAN does not have rights for HAV-CUN, for instance. The people just get of the plane, no body gets on board.
SCL-MIA-MCO was an experiment in 98-99; now they use the 767 for Lan Ecuador and leave MIA-MCO for codeshare with American.

The colors of the cabin is just backwards: The blue of the millenium ices for coach, the green valleys for business and the desert for first (as in a map: the desert on top, the icebergs below).

BTW, are you Chileans or did you just lived here for a while?

Mi aporte a la discusión...
Arcano, CRJBoy is right...First Class is glaciers and forests, Business is the Central Valley and coach is the desert. Haven't you seen those lovely blankets they give you in coach? With a degradaion of red, yellow and purple....very beautiful.

BTW, have they changed anything in the interiors since the new corporate image?
