Can We Sleep At LHR?

Sun Aug 15, 2004 7:45 am

Hi I am starting my second post on my trip to Italy this week. I never have been threw LHR so thats why I ask these? My previous post was called LHR HELP? and I got lots of help here was one of the ? no 1 helped me on.
Thanks for the help the way we are going to do it is YYZ-LHR AC856 arrive at around 0625 in the morning. Then we are suppose to rush to T2 and catch the AZ229 to LIN that leaves at 0715. There are 5 of us me being the employee i might not make it but the 4 others have confirmed seats so lets hope AC gives us boarding passes for AZ here in YYZ then its all good. To top it all off i have another tight cnx LIN SUF. AZ226 arrives at 1015 and AZ1175 LIN SUF leaves at 1100am talk about tight cnxs any way from the knowledge of all the members on A NET WILL I MAKE IT? Any opinions tips is accepted. My other option was to take AC868 arrive in LHR thursday night and catch the flight Friday morning. As I been told and heard I will not be able to sleep in the terminal B is this true are we able to sleep anywhere in the airport?

This is very general advice, but you won't be asked to leave a terminal if you have a genuine reason (in other words a ticket) to be there.

An 0715 departure would generally mean that check in would be open early for the flight anyway.

Just don't make a nuisance of yourself and have your ticket ready to show to any staff or security who ask. Lots of passengers have late arrivals and early onward connections, so end up at the airport over the few hours that passes for night at LHR.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find my own way there...

50 minutes connection at LHR is a no hope. Bare in mind if you touchdown on time you probably wont get onto stand until about 6:35, then once your out it will be nearing 7:00 at the earliest. Then you have to transfer terminals which will take at least 5 minutes. Then go through security and what not in T2 (which at that time in the morning took me over half an hour when i did it).

Take the second option, whether you can sleep or not.

Why do you post a 'duplicate' of your original posting?

You're asking the same old questions and ignoring all the good answers.

Even some of your flight details are conflicting - in both posts!

It has been advised more than once that your connections do not meet MCT requirements at LHR.

The Res agent making your friends' booking should not have made it inside MCT.

If your friends had good advice they could have booked a perfectly good trip with AZ YYZLINSUF with absolutely no hassle with MCT at LHR.

Your current trip arrangements have every makings of a disaster, not only for your friends, but definitely for you!

First off I am sorry for reposting but here are a few things. First off i am an AC employee and the easiest way and cheapest way to get my buddys to SUF is threw LHR I am using buddy passes YYZ LHR. Second i called AZ 2 times and they said the CNX is legal and if we get delayed coming in they will bump us to the next AZ flight. Third is the fact that its such a tight cnx and all and the members of A NET are more help then the people in a call center I take there advice any day. So thanks to all you A NET members. Also we are now taking the morning flight we get at LHR at 2100 and i wanted to know if we are able to sleep there thats all. Any time any 1 needs help fron YYZ i will help. And i believe that we should exchange info being an AC employee with benifts we are able to fly alot I am sure its the same for employes that work in this field thanks again for all the help and sorry for reposting CIAO!

Good thing you are taking the morning flight into LHR. And if I were you, I'd pray that the flight will be delayed into LHR so your night at the airport will be shorter  Smile In any case, it should not be boring for ya'll to be at the airport overnight, as long as you can stand eachother for a long time - I gather you are travelling together because this is not an issue. And since you are an airline/aircraft fan, you have no reason to not like being at 'famous' airport overnight: just take lotsa pictures and share them with us.

I don't know if there is a deal between AC and AZ, but as a nonrev, don't you have to pick up your luggage and then re-checkin? Traveling as an ID-90 required me to claim and recheck on US airlines, including when connecting on the same airline.

As stated previously I am afraid you simply will not make the morning connection at LHR. From experience T3 will be extremely busy at this time in the morning as this is when the first bank of eastern USA&Canada, and middle and far east flights arrive. This is often the busiest time for connecting and flight connections cannot cope. The stated mct (min connecting time) is 90 minutes but this is unachievable at this time of day - two hours should be the minimum.

As for sleeping at the airport people do it, but you run the risk of being moved on by the police or security - ticket or not. Aside from that its uncomfortable and not entirely safe. £40 or so for a room at somewhere like the travel inn will be money well spent and will safeguard your connection.

ps - HAVE FUN  Smile

There are numerous hotels located just stones throw from LHR where you can get a cheap room for the night.

If you are still intending to sleep in the airport then in T2, if you take the escalator to the floor above the check-in hall there are quite a few seats on the left at the top where people tend to sleep/wait overnight.

The coffee shop is also open all night I beleive and it does get quite busy up there as alot of the flights from T2 depart really early so check-in normally opens between 0500-0530 depending on the airline.

Hi all,

Thanks for all information.
Middle September I will be flying to Cairo with Alitalia and flight leaves 6:10 a.m., so me and my friend will take the last train (Underground) to LHR and spend the night there.
I once spent a night at STN and I could not get a seat as the airport was packed as early morning is departures time at STN.

We will not get a hotel because we get in at 2115 by the time we get bags go threw customs and all it will be 2200-2300. Then we get a cab or a shuttle lets say 1am we get into the room we take showers 5 of us and freshen up and all that its alredy 3am to sleep for 1 hr NOT WORTH IT. Correct me if i am wrong if any one thinks it will take less time then okay we might think of it. But its already been said we wait and wander T2.

SUF is where home is my family is there small airport maybe 5 gates they service mostly MD80's, 737,A321,and A330 (sky service) its in Calabria southern Italy lots nice beachs and sights if you all can visit it 1 day thanks ciao !

There is an Area in the departure level (going to the Gates) at terminal 3 which has excellent comfortable seats!. Once I arrived there from A long flight from Singapore and there were such comfortable seats in the corner.

One thing about spending the night at LHR is that security/LHR staff will look for unwanted/homeless people who should not be there; Although they let you stay if you are a genuine passenger.

Obviously its your call but you could be in a hotel by 22:00 no problem. Eastbound flights generally make up a little time. Yesterday and today that very flight arrived (or is scheduled to arrive in todays case) an hour early and thats bearing in mind it left twenty minutes late today (according to flightracker). This is also a quieter time of day to arrive and you should have your bags around 30 minutes after landing. Allow for a 5 minute wait for the shuttle and a 5 minute ride to the hotel and with a little luck you could be in the hotel by 21:00!!. By contrast if you elect to stay in the airport you could have up to eight hours to kill before checking in for your next flight - not pleasant after a 6 hour flight!
If there are 5 to a room you are only paying £8 each for the night - IMHO a small price for peace of mind and some uninterrupted sleep.
Of course it could go the other way if your flight gets delayed but I would say this is pretty unlikely. Daytime north america-europe flights are usually pretty reliable - often aircraft have overnighted before this sector instead of possibly arriving late from earlier sectors.

As I said this is just my opinion but either way I hope you find the information usefull.

Does LHR offer a facility with showers and related services for a fee? If so, maybe that could help. Do you have any 'friends' near LHR you could stay with, of course offering some money or a gift for their help? I would suspect that sleeping at the airports ilike LHR in normal situations is more difficult post-9/11 for security reasons.

Missed a flight to BCN last summer from LHR, and had to camp out upstairs on the couches, the only time I ever ate breakfast, lunch, and dinner all at McDonalds...ick!
