American Airlines to Begin Nonstop Service From Los Angeles to San Jose, Costa Rica
Monday August 16, 12:00 pm ET

FORT WORTH, Texas, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- American Airlines will begin daily nonstop service between Los Angeles and San Jose, Costa Rica, on Dec. 16. The new flight is the latest in a series of additions the airline has made this year to its international schedule in Los Angeles.
American will fly the Los Angeles-San Jose route using Boeing 757 aircraft configured with 22 First-Class seats and 166 Main-Cabin seats. The 757 features large overhead storage bins that allow carry-on luggage to be stored "wheels first," creating more overall storage space and making it easier to stow and remove bags.

In addition, powerports are located at each seat in the First-Class cabin and are conveniently placed throughout the Main Cabin, so passengers can work en route, operate their own CD or DVD players, or even recharge cell phones.

Passengers in Los Angeles will also find an oasis for work or relaxation at the Admirals Club® facility located across from Gate 40 in Terminal 4.

As with all American Airlines flights throughout its route system, the airline will also offer its Los Angeles-San Jose customers superior service, great low fares and the opportunity to earn and redeem AAdvantage® frequent- flyer miles.

Here is American's schedule for the new Los Angeles-San Jose, Costa Rica, flight (all times shown are local):

From Los Angeles to San Jose, Costa Rica
Flight Departs Arrives
#927 11:30 p.m. 7:24 a.m. (next day)

From San Jose, Costa Rica to Los Angeles
Flight Departs Arrives
#934 5:00 p.m. 9:01 p.m.

Travelers can check fares and book flights by visiting American's Web site, AA.com, or AA.com/espanol. Bookings made on AA.com or AA.com/espanol earn up to 1,000 AAdvantage bonus miles. Travel arrangements can also be made by calling American's reservations number at 1-800-433-7300 within the United States and Canada (en espanol 1-800-633-3711). Outside the United States and Canada, call your local reservations number.

San Jose is the third international destination to be added to American's Los Angeles schedule this year. In April, the airline began daily service to Tokyo, and in June nonstop service was added to San Salvador, El Salvador. Also this year, American increased its existing schedule of flights from Los Angeles to London and Toronto.

For San Jose, the flight to Los Angeles represents its fourth nonstop destination in the American Airlines network, joining Dallas/Fort Worth, Miami and New York Kennedy. San Jose is one of two destinations the airline serves in Costa Rica. Earlier this year, American began nonstop flights to Guanacaste Liberia in northwest Costa Rica from its Miami hub. That service will grow from three times weekly to five times weekly beginning Nov. 1.

American Airlines is the world's largest carrier. American, American Eagle, and the AmericanConnection® regional carriers serve more than 250 cities in over 40 countries with nearly 4,200 daily flights. The combined network fleet numbers more than 1,000 aircraft. American's award-winning Web site, AA.com, provides users with easy access to check and book fares, plus personalized news, information and travel offers. The service will do just fine. They are the second largest airline in Costa Rica. They fly MIA-SJO (4x daily), DFW-SJO (2x daily), and JFK-SJO (4x a week) as well. They also fly MIA-LIR. LIR is in Costa Rica's Pacific Coast.

I can't help but wonder if this was a response to a rumor of somebody ELSE starting up a service before American could. I specifically wonder if they may have been trying to beat HP to the punch.

I doubt it. American has been planning to launch this route for a long time, along with FLL-SJO (which is still on the plan for the future). It is part of their bulk up of international LAX service (like recently added LAX-NRT and LAX-SAL) to gain strength as UA weakens. LAX-GUA is next, probably for June 2005.

This is a very smart move. Not only is there a lot of visiting friends & relatives traffic on LA-Central America, there is a huge growing tourist market. United and American are battling at LAX for international traffic, with AA doing most of the growing (announcing SAL, NRT, SJO, 2x LHR) compared to UA (only announcing 2x SYD).

AA has a big frequent flyer base in SoCal, so it makes sense not forcing people to go through MIA or DFW to get to Central America.

Where will the plane go between 7:30 AM and 5PM?

This is not unexpected. I think they are taking advantage of UA's weakened condition. Maybe they can pick up on UA's small operation these days at JFK!?!?!?!

It won't be the same exact plane serving both flights. The plane will operate AA 2163 from Dallas, then operate the SJO-LAX-SJO service, then go back to Dallas the next morning.
