Continental & Continental Micronesia?

I've always wondered why Continental and Continental Micronesia operate as separate entities. For two airlines that essentially share the same brand, fleet, and in-flight product, it's a mystery to me as to why they still fly under two different names.

Does it have something to do with brand-loyalty (those who fly CO Mike don't want to see it swallowed up completely by CO), destinations (being separate from CO gives CO Mike the flexibility to fly to more far-reaching Pacific destinations) – or, simply money (it's cost-effective to have this subsidiary)?

I think it is an employee thing. I imagine that the employees within Continental Micronesia are paid a little more, especially considering the high cost of living in the region.

CO Mike no longer has a dedicated fleet of aircraft and the name is long gone. While the 738s are based in Guam, the 764s rotate with the other aircraft, IIRC. It may operate EWR-GRU one week, and NRT-GUM the next.

They still operate on seperate certificates and "Continental Micronesia, Inc." was the entity that applied for (and got) the new Honolulu-Nagoya route.

I once read that the subsidiary is kept distinct because the Government of Guam has certain repurchase rights that date back to the 1960's, but I can't remember the details.

Its Kind of Complicated but 9 737-800's operate on the Continental Micronesia Certificate..the 767-400's are on CO's Pilots work for CO F/A's and ground staff work for AirMike..All signage at airports and Airplanes are now Continental Airlines not Continental Micronesia anymore..Hope this Helps but it was Confusing for PAX in Japan to see Continental and Continental Micronesia operating at the Same Counter Same in Honolulu..

Continental Micronesia is 100% owned by Contental Airlines pay is almost the Same, the Guam and Saipan Ground workers are Union (IBT) Ramp in Gate at CO is Non Union..Kind of miss the Continental Micronesia DC-10 Flying EWR-LAX
