First Cambodia Airlines Grounded

Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:58 pm

First Cambodia Airlines today confirmed that it had ceased operation as the airline battles to survive in what it claims a "fierce competition".

The airline operates a single A320-200, and had previously served CAN, SIN and KUL. It is own by the Cambodian Prime Minister's daughter and a consortium of investors from China and Hong Kong.

The airline maintains that the suspension will only be temporary, and that the company was looking for leasing another aircraft at a more "affordable" rate in order to stay more cost competitive while it later on resumes flights.

I see two options for First Cambodia Airlines

1. another Cambodian airline disappearing
2. Operating an older aircraft type such as a 732 (and than we might still go to option 2)

I wonder why there are so many airlines going bust in Cambodia. I'm just thinking of a few, such as Royal Air Cambodge, Mekong Airlines etc.

Swissgabe,

Cambodia is an enormously difficult market to do any business venture from, let alone run an airline.

I think perhaps the biggest problem is that tourism fills most of the seats and given Cambodia is "on the trail" rather than a major destination in it's own right, Vietnam Airlines and others clearly have an advantage in being able to capture the in/out tourist run.

I have once read, that a company needs to fill out something like 42 forms if they want to import goods. I wonder how many you have to fill out to operate an airline. If not mistaken, it goes for Cambodia as well, that there are only airlines where the main shareholder is the government and they normally do 51/49 joint-venture with other companies. Exception seems to be Lao Airlines and Myanma Airways which are fully government owned (guess VN as well).

Sorry Gents, but you Cambodia experts are what I'm looking for and I need a history lesson.

I flew Royal Air Cambodge in 1960/61 on DC3/C47s and always wondered about the history of that carrier. Did they go bust more than once? Fleets? Ownership.

All this was before the Khmer Rouge took over but they certainly were around in one form or another and I assume an airline bringing in outsiders was the last thing they wanted. I'd love some info or sources if anyone can supply them.

Thanks

M404,

The only thing I know about Royal Air Cambodge (RC) is that it flourished in the early 70s and was operating Caravelle jets from Phnom Penh and Siem Reap to Manila, Canton, HKG, BKK, SIN and Denpasar. Domestic flights to Siem Reap operated with Caravelle jets, DC6B, DC6 and DC4. After the communist take-over, it ceased opeartions. The current Royal Air Cambodge (VJ) is a different entity.

All I can say is...

A) Cambodia is a lovely lovely country, if you're in the area, GO AND VISIT! (particularly Siem Reap)
B) I love the livery of their's
C) I hate seeing startups go bust  Sad

I don't even think that RAC is even existing now is it? Hmm.... I was wondering why were the flights on S7 cancelled last week when I was at the airport?
