AA Delays HNL-NRT

Wed Aug 18, 2004 10:34 am

For those of you wondering what has happened to AA's NRT-HNL service, it has been delayed. While approved by DOT to fly the route, AA has been unable to secure/purchase slots to operate the flight this year. They will start the service once the right slots become available to them and expect to have the route running by mid-2005.

Is there really that much demand again between HNL and NRT? UA just doubled its daily frequency, as did NW just recently. And doesn't JAS and ANA operate that route as well?

And the winner for best actress is....REESE WITHERSPOON for 'Walk the Line'!!!!!!!!

Each month the Hawai'i tourist arrival numbers show that arrivals from Asia (Japan) are up almost 40% over last year!

AA has been unable to secure/purchase slots to operate the flight this year.

Last time when this was discussed, several had mentioned that the unused slots were already available for AA. No?

I didn't think it was going to be easy to add routes to/from NRT. Maybe use SJC slots which has been rumored to end in the near future??

And doesn't JAS and ANA operate that route as well?

JAS is now part of Japan Air Lines..no longer exists.

There are slots available, but not the right ones that will allow/fit into their current HNL ops. This is also one of the reasons HA gave up the route authority. HA couldn't get slots that would allow connections to/from mainland or interisland flights, thus it was decided that the route would be unprofitable for them without the correct slots.

I've heard that AA has no plans to cancel SJC-NRT whatsoever, this is one of their best performing routes with excellent support from Silicon Valley companies. Most of the Bay Area business growth is in SJC catchment area, not in the cities of San Francisco or Oakland. Large Asian-American population throughout the entire Bay Area.

The flight does fine and is not being canceled. Though calling it one of its performing routes is a stretch. It's not.
