Ground/water Transportation From VCE?

Wed Aug 18, 2004 11:47 pm

I will be traveling to Venice in a few weeks and am confused about how the ground transportation system works from VCE. My hotel is near the train station in Venice proper -- can anyone give advice on the best options? Many thanks in advance.

From VCE airport, there is a bus shuttle that takes you directly to "Piazzale Roma", very next to the "Santa Lucia" railways station. It takes about 30 minutes to get there from the Airport.

There is also a boat service ("Motoscafo") from the airport to "Piazza San Marco". It takes about 1 hour and the trip great and much more "romantic" than the bus. There is a boat every hour normally but aditional boats are programmed during the high peak season. From Piazza San Marco, take the regular "Vaporetto" line 1 to go to "Piazzale Roma" or "Ferrovia" (Railway station). Don't take a private "Taxi boat" it will cost you a fortune !

FLYSSC pretty much summed it up for you, I'll just add that the ATVO bus to piazzale Roma costs €3 and is a very convenient ride. Should you take that, you can then either schlep your bags over the ponte degli Scalzi (the big bridge in front of the train station), which is quite a long way, or take the line #1 vaporetto and get off at the first stop (the railway station).

Watertaxis are indeed very expensive (upwards of €60), but great if you want to get into the city in a very scenic and glamorous way  Big grin

If you've got any questions about Venice, feel free to drop me a mail, it's my hometown!

If you are sure that you're staying at Venice and not mestre, the easiest way is to take the bus, it takes about 20 minutes. I was backpacking there, and I stayed half a block away from Santa Lucia rail station. I recommend you from the bus stop to walk to your hotel, it takes about 3 blocks, and you get to "experience" Venice with the canals and bridges from the very begining. Lovely!

Venice is small enough to walk it entirely, and the vaporetto is the best way to get to the other islands: Murano, Burano, the Cementery, etc.

Good luck in such a lovely city! if you want a gondola ride, bargain a lot!
