Mesa Airlines After UA/US Demise?

Since USAirways and United are both in dire straits financially, the failure of both airlines would significantly jeopardize the success of Mesa Airlines, which operates significant amount of regional traffic for them. This would leave Mesa solely with America West. In this situation, wouldn't this give America West more leverage to make Mesa dance to their tune operationally? Also, since regionals like Chautauqua, Republic and Skywest would also be impacted, couldn't this open new doors for America West to explore new options with those carriers? This is not a post intended to argue about whether US or UA is going under, but rather the future of the affected regional carriers if both carriers were to die.

I think Mesa has more immediate problems to worry about than whether or not US and UA are going to go under. If they don't get their act together it won't matter if UA sticks around, they might get dumped either way.

Okay folks, like I said, this is not about UA or US and their possible upcoming demise. It's about Mesa and their viability after that point and the affect on other affiliated regionals. Let's stay focused on how the thread was intended....it's not that difficult.

Well, one little aspect of the impact that a failed legacy carrier would have on the regionals is that aircraft asset values would take a significant hit for a few reasons.

First, the most obvious reason is the difficulty in redeploying their aircraft in an industry already awash with RJs.

Second, with reduced airline competition, many routes would have to upgrade equipment to satisfy demand, thus adding even more RJs to the surplus column.

Third, if the regional goes under then an entire fleet of RJs will then be available on the cheap.

To a lesser extent this will happen anyway if some legacy carriers follow through on their stated plans to focus more on long haul flights and less on regional/short haul flights.

The problem YV is having with UA is not a arrival/departure problem. It's a number of aircraft in the fleet problem. YV told UA that they would have a certain number of planes in the UA system and they have not met their obligations to UA so therefore the UAE system is short on planes that were supposed to be provided by YV. That is why UA may be looking at another express carrier to fly some routes. Besides YV is moving alot of their UAE operations to IAD to replace lots of the ACA flying that was lost when they spun off Indy Air and went solo. But to get an answer to your question YV has lots of cash on hand and they are in talks with other carriers just in case something like this would happen. I'm sure there would be some furloughs of employees but it (losing UA, US) wouldn't liquidate the company. Johnny O may be hated by lots of his employees but he always has a plan just incase.

No... Mesa does not fly for NW.

They operate in the West and Midwest as America West Express; the Midwest and East as US Airways Express; in Chicago, Denver and LA as United Express; in Kansas City with Midwest Express; and independantly in NM and TX as Mesa Airlines.

They were working on a plan for that, flying under their own colors, using 737-300's but the plan fell through due to the pilot union rejecting the offer. From what I hear YV was offering the pilots CRJ-900 pay to fly the 737-300 and it was rejected.
