Sudan Airways To Be Privatised

Thu Aug 19, 2004 5:40 am

Ok, I read this and went ummmmpff! But hey, I wish SD all the success!

What aircraft does SD operate these days? I recall seeing a 727 in an online timetable, as well as an A300.

KHARTOUM, Sudan, Aug 18, 2004 (PANA) -- Authorities here have invited foreign investors to buy shares in a new firm planned to replace the troubled Sudan Airways as part of a full privatisation policy.

Finance and National Economy Minister Elzubier Ahmed Elhassan announced that restructuring of Sudan Airways was a preparatory step towards strategic partnership of the airline, which began operations in 1947.

I thought that Sudan was on an axis of evil or something similar.

If so, presumably US investment is a non starter.

Given the situation in the Darfur, I can not see the EU or an European State Owned Airline touching it either.

The Arabs might be interested.

This story has been going around since 1999, and nothing has happened since. If (and this is a big if) the airline does get privatised, I would say it would probably be by an Arab businessman from the Gulf.

Yeah, not surprised about it either - maybe they are trying to overtake the Nigerians with their prospects of having Nigeria Airways privatized (how many years now?)
