CEO Of MyTravel Airways Defects To Monarch

Fri Aug 20, 2004 5:03 am

Another news story that must be sending shivers down the spines of the shareholders of MyTravel is that the CEO Jonathon Crick has defected from MyTravel Airways to Monarch Airlines to head their Low Cost Scheduled services.

In many respects this Jonathon Crick guy has taken a downwards move in his career ladder because instead of him being head of a whole airline as he was before, he is only heading there scheduled services. But Monarch are promising that their Scheduled Service will increase dramatically over the coming months and year.

Think you misread that. It's Tim Jeans who is moving from MyTravel - Jonathon Crick was already with Monarch and moves to a new post.

How can moving from a practically bankrupt and hopeless company, to one that is healthy, be a bad move for anyone?

MYT is really going down the drain. We've been hearing about their financial problems for almost 18 months...surprised they've survived that long, but would be great if they managed a turnaround.

IT's been going on for a lot longer than 18 months.

Bad investments were just the start of it, plus the whole rebranding exercise didn't work as they hoped. Airtours expanded like crazy with loads of borrowed cash, and paid top dollar for a lot of assets which then got substantially devalued for various reasons.

The banks are just keeping it alive to try and get some of their cash back before it all tanks.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before... according to this month's Airliner World, as part of a major cost-cutting drive, MYT are getting rid of their entire Boeing fleet (3 767-300s and 5 757s) and the remaining DC-10-30, shedding 500 staff in the process. This accounts for nearly a third of its fleet. Things must be looking bleak.

Didn't Tim Jeans originally move to My Travel to head up Lite?

you got it CKT789...

He joined MyTravel from Ryanair

FLYtoEGCC - of course getting rid of aircraft and shrinking not expanding doesn't look good.
The move however makes sense as MyTravel will have less aircraft types in the fleet improving commonality and reducing maintenance costs etc..

They will also have less excess capacity for the quieter times of the year which will mean less need to lease aircraft out - so in general a more stable year round operation.

No doubt additional summer capacity (where needed) for the Airtours tour operator will come from chartering from other airlines - perhaps we'll see more examples of the arrangements in place with Air Scandic, Skyservice and Spanair at various UK airports this summer.
I don't like signatures...

Tim Jeans did originally go to MYT to head up their Lite division. However, last year he was promoted to be in charge of the entire aviation division.

Perhaps he might make Monarch more attractive to those of us that frequent LCCs - at the moment, Monarch are rather expensive for an airline that classes itself as low-cost. I've heard their service is/has been pretty good, but they do seem to charge for it!

cheers

I think Monarch had great value for money. In april I flew them BCN-MAN, had a delicious hot meal and free booze and a few drink rounds on board and that for only 55 GBP inclusive. I am sorry but it's not unlogical they started to charge for meals since, it was just too good to be true.

Hey Gkirk, I know its more likely they'll survive (and I want them to do it) but I hope they don't have to make any more siginificant cutbacks like their recent move to dispose of all the Boeing aircraft.
