Philippine Airlines 744 At SFO 3 Days Now

Fri Aug 20, 2004 7:00 am

RP-C8168 has been at SFO since Sunday night. Am trying to iron out the details as to whether she actually took off and came back after an hour or so of flight ( & landing during the wee hours of Monday Aug 16) or whether she aborted during take-off roll.

As of noon today she was still parked at the same location. Engine #s 1 & 4 had their coverings partially open.

Does anyone have any more info about this?

Update on this: 8168 took off for Manila reportedly using two engines only around 5:00PM today. No passengers aboard.

How can a B747 fly on 2 engines only? Last time I know it happened was when a LY 747 crashed in AMS in 1992.

The 747 can techinically fly with one engine. But I am not sure if they can take off like that.

can't imagine a 2 engine ferry being legal. Anything goes wrong and the plane is in the drink.

3 engines ferries of 4 engine craft happen, but even then a lot of planning is involved.

Just looked up the flight. The aircraft was flown or ferried to HNL as PAL Flight 7. Departed SFO at about 5 pm and arrived in HNL at about 7 pm.

SFO212, thanks for the head-up as to the flight number for 8168.

PAL flight #7 just took off from Honolulu 6:37AM local time and should be arriving Manila 10:39AM, Saturday, Aug 21 (Philippine Time).

I wonder why it had to stop at HON when it could have flown directly given that there were no pax from SFO.

When you first posted this news a couple of days ago, I actually thought that it would make the stop at HNL on its way back to MNL, despite flying empty.

I think the stop at HNL is a mandatory technical stop - passengers or not.

It was at the LHT Philippines hangar with two engines removed as I flew on N754PR to Cebu this afternoon.

Lufthansa 747,

Which engines were removed? Outer?

Trickijedi,

PAL's website schedule mentions a stop at HON but I there are times (usually off-peak season) when their planes fly straight to MNL.

Yeah it's usually when the headwinds aren't that strong in which they don't need to top their tanks off at HNL.

A 3 engine ferry is allowed by Boeing, however, Boeing will not give approval for a 2 engine ferry on the 744. In fact, Boeing will not even provide take off performance charts to allow TOD computation.

In addition, I am positive the FAA would never issue a ferry permit to allow the aircraft to depart SFO.

I now hear from guys in Manila that 8168 was ferried using three engines as against talk by SFO folks that it took off using 2 engines only.
